Sure, they might make mistakes. But unless someone is standing on the sideline every day, the coaches have a lot more information to base their evaluations upon.

Why, right here on this very board, the perception began that Jevohn Miller was a future defensive end--solely because of his listed size on the official roster. That despite Wally Burnham's comments on the subject--whom I am reasonably sure is a better authority on the subject than anyone who has ever posted here.

No insult to the football alums who post intended. .

I think Jevohn himself saying that he was going to start his career by at LB fueled the speculation more than anything. He definitely left the option for a move to the line open.

Maybe he could be a DE/LB Hybrid this year. He has the size and more than enough speed it seems.

He appears to have some of the tools to eventually be a 3-4 OLB, which is one of the more difficult positions to fill IMO. Whether that ever comes to be is another story. As they say, there is a lot of green between here and there.

The Hawks did miss on Miller and Reece Morgan should be embarrassed for letting him slip away, considering Reece coached at Benton Community less than 25 minutes away from Brooklyn for over a decade. Miller went to Iowa's camp between his sophomore and junior year and all they had was high school coaches working with them, he never was introduced to any of their assistants, half of them weren't even working at the camp. He sent in his profile and tapes to Iowa, they never contacted his BGM coach for more film, they have most of their assistants recruiting the East Coast, not Iowa, because of their big Orange Bowl win they got "4-star" recruits interested in them. ISU's coaches were blown away by Miller's workout tape, liked his film, had him up at 7-on-7 camp where he dominated against big school players, he got his offer the following week at padded camp and committed to ISU two days later because he felt valued and appreciated by Coach Rhoads and staff, and slighted by the Hawks. The kid's room was painted in Iowa colors with a big Tigerhawk on the wall, he went to their football camps, speed camps, and they paid him no attention because in-state talent is not a priority, just what they string along to fill gaps in their recruiting classes if the big fish go elsewhere.

Mark my word: Miller will be a better college linebacker and NFL prospect than the undersized and low-ceiling James Morris. Miller has huge room for growth in all aspects of his game. He's already there in play making ability, see his interceptions in practice, fumble return in last Saturday's scrimmage. Only will get bigger, faster, stronger, and smarter. Rhoads said in his presser today, Jevohn Miller is the type of football player who even if he aligns wrong, does the wrong thing, he will still make a play. ISU hasn't ever had many players like that, Miller and players like him are exactly what we need to take us to the next level.

As for Miller only being a high two-star rated player, and not a 5-star player who we might have expected to move up the depth chart fast, seriously brett108, how much time does Rivals or Scout spend evaluating Class A players in Iowa? James Morris was only a mid 3-star player and everyone knew he was going to rise up the depth chart at Iowa last year. Miller probably didn't even send in his tape to the recruiting services to get evaluated and he surely didn't get the greatest positional coaching at BGM-Brooklyn to be a 5-star type linebacker. Now he has competition in practice and great coaches and the commitment to excel. He will be a beast linebacker for Iowa State for the next four years.

Even though he's third in the depth chart I think Horne is going to be in the 2 deeps by start of the fall. From the practice videos he seems to be a very polished WR in that he understands route running, body control, and catching the ball.

There's been a lot of talk about not having a certain type of WR like a speedster or a strong, physical WR. I think the WR we have had are good enough in those aspects but have been deficient in the little things that make up a good WR.

I think the WR's could be okay, but it is hard to have the passing game Herman wants without at least one unit of the WR's or the QB's being good to great...and a good OLine.

I'm from his hometown of Brooklyn, know his family very well (Brooklyn's only about 1300 people, really we're all one big family), have talked to him and his high school coach several times about his recruitment, and I'm an Iowa alum who was very interested in Iowa going after him and feeling ashamed at how they seemingly paid very little attention to him. I still love my alma mater but have lost a lot of respect for their football program because of this, having two star players kicked off the team for drugs, and the Rhabdo scandal, and fully support Paul Rhoads and Iowa State football for recognizing Jevohn's potential and giving him the opportunity of a lifetime. Buying ISU season tickets, pushing so many of my hawk fans from Brooklyn to support their hometown kid and ISU. Family is more important than loyalty to a team with which you have no familial connections.

Great...we have had one receiver live up to the hype over a ten year period. Whopptydamndo. I did notice you didn't post his Jr and Sr numbers. Probably because he lived up to the hype for one year and then dropped off. He had fewer catches, fewer yards, fewer TDs and fewer YPC in his Jr and Sr campaigns.

Don't get me wrong, I like Blythe and thought he was darn good but he peaked as a soph and really didn't live up to the hype of his soph season. People were thinking NFL type receiver after his soph year.

I still think the NFL could use him in goal line, but you have GMS that work for teams such as Oakland that apparantly are worth their salaries.... not.

Honestly though, your commentary has made me even more excited for football season. I love the way the Bash brothers play, and it sounds like Miller may be every bit of a a ball hawk as the others(I know it is early, but you cannot deny that he has already outperformed most of our expectations). IS IT FALL YET???

Our WR's are freaking awesome. Even though they do not get separation and drop a lot of easily catchable balls.
