Re: Should we drop Iowa?
I think ISU is doing more damage to the schedule by including teams like Utah and UConn. With Iowa and nine conference games, the other two OOC games should be UNI (or other division II school) and a Sun Belt / MAC team.

Neither school has a national pull or has a brand name so in the end your point is not valid. Exactly, we aren't gaining anything more from this than any other game either. If we lose, great, we lost a game where we were likely an underdog. If we win, nobody gives us any props because it was a rivalry game that we win with some regularity (sort of ironic).
We aren't going to grow our casual fan base at all by beating Iowa. We have been beating them regularly since the late 90s. A winning program is what is going to bring the fans. Recruiting is much the same story. The only possible thing we have to gain with this game is the ability to talk trash to dbag hawk fans for a year if we win, but frankly I don't find that worth it. I would rather just not deal with dbag hawk fans at all.

I'd just prefer not to play 'em at all so we don't have to put up with the stink that permeates Ames every other year.

I don't remember a time where the Iowa-Iowa State game wasn't on TV, but dropping the Iowa game for a 1-AA opponent every year would mean less TV exposure.

When ISU beat Iowa in 2007 it made the Today show... oh wait...

If we played Directional State U. last year instead of the squawks, we most likely would've a) had 1 more home game and b) gotten extra bowl practices.
I'd prefer playing other BCS conference schools once in a while then be stuck playing the **** and black colored idiots every other year. Maybe schedule them for a home and home every 10 years. They could've lobbied for us to join the Big 10 but they don't think we're good enough for that conference. Screw 'em!

The years that we went to a bowl game we weren't playing a nine game conference schedule. This is what the debate is about, should we still play the game considering we have to play a 9 game conf schedule. The debate isn't should we play Iowa if we have a schedule like we did from 2000-2010, one in which we didn't have to play the entire south division every year.

If you're a school that typically hovers around the 5-7 win mark, having iowa on the schedule vs a minor FBS conference team makes a big difference.

Re: Should we drop Iowa?
I voted keep the game. I like it, its probably my favorite game of the year when it is in ames.
I dont understand why people think that we cant win this game. In most years IA is a 7-9 win team and we have proven lately that we CAN win. Scheduling Iowa doesnt automatically mean that we wont go to a bowl.
If we had won the game more often in the past 4 years I would suspect that there would be many more people saying "keep it" than get rid of it.
“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...” – columnist Sean Keeler, Des Moines Register -

IF IF IF Again, the Iowa game did not keep us from bowling last year.

There is no arguing that fact. You dont set yourself up to lose before the season even begins by having a tougher schedule than most of your conference, especially when you are a typically cellar dwelling team.

Re: Should we drop Iowa?
Only once in the past 20+ years has Iowa State been one win away from bowl eligibility and lost to Iowa. It just happens that was last year. The "risk" we run (which personally I perceive as cowardice) is nowhere near the level of excitement and energy that this game brings the team and its fanbase. Some of you may disagree, but there is no question that for the fanbase as a whole, this is the biggest game of the year.
If you're "worried", don't b**** about the schedule being too hard... just win the damn game! Go Cyclones

Again, the Iowa game did not keep us from bowling last year. Again, last year we didn't have a 9 game schedule. Having Iowa basically means you are playing another top tier major conference team. It is like playing ten conference games out of a total of 12 games. Having the toughest schedule in the nation or close to it, is not a good thing for a program that is trying to improve. Having that tough of schedule means we probably aren't going to a bowl game and therefore not attracting better recruits, which equals continued losing. Who cares if we beat them every few years, we need someone we can beat every year so we can have three wins going into conference play.
Iowa shouldn't want this game either when the big ten goes to a 9 game schedule.
