Really? 85th? I guess they figure were going to finish 2-10 or 3-9 this year.

I'm sure Rhoads will use it as motivation.

Re: #85 Iowa State
the problem with this is that with the schedule ISU has most teams in the bottom 50 teams would have a lot of trouble winning 5 games. Does the fact that the Cyclones have a super hard schedule make them a worse team than a team with a weak schedule?

Re: #85 Iowa State
I guess going about .500 over the past two years hasnt changed much public opinion

Re: #85 Iowa State
I don't have a problem with it, it only means we have 84 teams to prove wrong.... -

Colorado, Kansas, Virginia, Duke, Wake Forest, Indiana, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Washington State. I would say that is quite a few and there also should be mostly non BCS teams that are going to fill in for the 85-120 slots, but this ranking has way too many BCS schools below 85th.

I'm sure Rhoads will use it as motivation. Yea..on paper our offense (which wasn't anything special last year) looks pretty bleak. We didn't just lose AA, we lost nearly all our offensive production. I don't agree with being 85th, but I get why someone would think we could be one of the poorer BCS teams. The hard part to believe is that 20 or so non BCS teams are expected to be better.

Re: #85 Iowa State
im sure they would put northern illinois above us. they did last year even though we kicked their ***.
its like, because they beat ball state, toledo, akron, buffalo and whoever else they play, people seem to think they're good. Middle Tennessee state was ranked #25 to start last season! I bet we would have beaten them easily.

Re: #85 Iowa State
These preseason ranking things are pretty meaningless. I'm sure we're picked 8th or 9th in the 10-team Big XII. With an offense that was weak last year, and loses some talented guys, I can't blame them much. However, I look at the losses on the personnel side as a positive. Year 3 of the new offense should start seeing the guys hit the field on offense that the coaches think can run their system, not guys that have gone through three different system and did their best in each. I have to believe they will be better, and definitely better than number 85 in any publication's rankings. Go State!

Re: #85 Iowa State
I don't see this as a surprise. We were 5-7 last year and like someone said we lost the majority of our offensive production. It is hard to predict what QB and WR positions will do this year. And we have one of the toughest schedules in the country. I don't think the ranking is about not getting respect I think if you look at it objectively that is where we should be ranked preseason. That doesn't mean we could be better than that but there are too many question marks at important positions right now.

Re: #85 Iowa State
There are 11 BCS schools 85 and below (ISU inclusive) and since there are 66 BCS schools that means there are 55 left to be ranked between 1-84. That means there are 29 non BCA schools ranked 1-84. That 29 seems high to me - I know there are plenty of non BCS schools better than ISU but 29 really? I suppose if you are looking at record only then maybe. I would take ISU against most of those 29 (obviously there are very good schools BSU, TCU, BYU in that 29). I'd say if it were based on who would win on the field ISU should be around 25 places higher - say around 60th.
