The team drives past tent row before the game being led by a bunch of drunk people in an old fire truck.

Also, it's all free for the asking. There is nothing like a breakfast of Iowa chops and Makers Mark @ JTS.

Re: What makes Iowa State tailgating great?
Just heard back from him after I asked about why he is collecting information on underrated stadiums and tailgates. Here is what he said:
"Writing an article, can't say for who. If I use ISU, might ask for on-the-record quote. I'd heard some things about ISU already, this strengthens the case. Going to keep researching/talking to people, but this is a strong contender."
Keep posting more info, so if he does visit this site we will win, and if he does want a quote, I'll be able to be the most educated I can be on the topic.
Thanks everyone!

Re: What makes Iowa State tailgating great?
I find it heartening that he almost didn't think Iowa State was obscure enough for his list.

Re: What makes Iowa State tailgating great?
I know, I'm old, but in addition to all the great adult activities they have the kids zone with inflatables, face painting, Cy, etc. My kids love it.
Also, I love the tractor trams. We may as well be proud of the fact that we're an ag school!

Re: What makes Iowa State tailgating great?
In my college days, our tailgate specialty was "Itis burgers." This was a traditional cheeseburger, but we'd use Krispy Kreme donuts as buns. Along with a keg can of Heineken, I wouldn't be hungry for the rest of the weekend. I'd also bring a batch of chili when it got cold out and heat it up right over the grill.

Find an aerial shot of an actual game day
Google Earth image (essentially 0.9 x 0.6 miles of tailgating): [/QUOTE]
Don't use this picture because it is from a school day where you only see commuters and longterm parking. Hopefully, you can find an aerial shot from a gameday.

Re: What makes Iowa State tailgating great?
I couldn't imagine not having six hours for tailgating. It's the best Saturdays of the year! The group atmosphere is what really makes it for me. Considering there is so much parking available it is simply amazing how packed the lots are. I can't say that I have a favorite food item. I tailgate with a bunch of picky eaters so we usually do the hamburgers and brats thing (unless it's breakfast).

Re: What makes Iowa State tailgating great?
Why it's great is because most game days the tailgate is the better than the games. CPR is quickly changing that though.

Re: What makes Iowa State tailgating great?
Here is a testimonial. Last year, I tailgated all season with a guy who had worked for ISU for a short time. Now he lives and works in Peoria. He has been all over, but he has kept getting Iowa State season tickets and coming for tailgates for years because he has had such a good time here.

Drinking at 4-4:30 in the morning waiting IN LINE to get into the student lots when they open 5 A.M. for the 11:00 AM kick off. Hell yea...

And plenty of tailgating that takes place in homes and frats, as well as along the residential streets west of the stadium for blocks.

Good point. Does anyone have a picture of the line of cars parked for hours to get into the lots?

It's also taken during the game, so you don't see all of the people out tailgating.
