First Post - New Preferred Walk-on Kicker - Chris Moore
I found this site today, and saw a post on a freshman walk-on kicker - Chris Moore. He is my nephew. People in the post said, "Gee, did he play JV or what? I thought Texas filled the stands on Friday Night?" He played at Plano High School, which graduates 1650 kids per year - it is a HUGE high school and they play in a $35M stadium. The posted highlights, if he is in white, are on the road. At home, they averaged 9,000 over game, and 14,000+ in the playoffs. That is a big high school crowd.
Others said "the highlights showed just extra points kicked off a tee - illegal in college". He kicked plenty of field goals - missing just 3 all year his senior year, 2 because of bad snaps. His blocking was suspect all year on FGs. He had a long kick of 49 yards, and missed a 56-yarder by less than a foot wide left. Had the distance. He has been going to Iowa, Oklahoma and Texas camps for the last 3 years, and was the top kicker at the camp in Iowa in 2010. He is more than capable of kicking PATs and FGs without a tee. He really has a big leg.
More than 60% of his kickoffs were into the end zone, and he kicked 3 kickoffs out the back of the end zone in their only playoff game in 2010. He also hit a 42 yard field goal in the playoff, and it had so much extra distance, it went out of the back of the end zone by about 20 yards further into the parking lot. He also punted, and averaged about 47 yards per kick, but is currently a better kicker than punter.
He chose Iowa over Arkansas and Oklahoma schools because his grandparents on both sides are from Iowa, and he liked how the coaches treated him in recruiting.
He is a good kid, not cocky, but confident enough to make big kicks. He is so happy to be going to Iowa State, and I hope he helps your team. I certainly will be pulling for the Cyclones for the next 4 years, and hopefully, beyond.
Just wanted you to know. I know you want a winner and have been frustrated, but please try not to flame him until you see his capability. Think you will be glad he is vacating Texas for Iowa

For a second I was worried for you, then you finally said "Iowa State" instead of Iowa.
Re: First Post - New Preferred Walk-on Kicker - Chris Moore
Best of luck to him. Thanks for the information. I am confident, if he can adjust to the weather, he will have a great 4 years in ames at iowa state.

This guy sounds exactly like Tom Capello! Get him off the board rabble, rabble, rabble, rabble.:jimlad:(Being sarcastic)
In all honesty, thanks for the insight.
Re: First Post - New Preferred Walk-on Kicker - Chris Moore
We have a thing with Kickers. We always have bad ones and they always miss big kicks when it is most important. Thus we are weary of any new kickers. If your nephew is any better he will be a hero, if he misses a kick to cost us a Championship or Iowa game, he will be put in the scrap heap with the rest of them.

It's great to see that he has some power in that leg. Hopefully he can be or become consistent. Welcome to Cyclone Nation.

Except one time. One time we had a guy go ham on the Hawks. That was one of the better total redemption moments in Cyclone history.
Re: First Post - New Preferred Walk-on Kicker - Chris Moore
I'd say that he has a year to really prove himself. The starter is a SR and the position is going to be wide open in 2012. If Moore does well enough in practice this year, maybe he proves to the coaches that they don't need to go out and recruit a scholarship kicker in the 2012 class. I'd tell him to bust his rear this season in practice and see if he can't surprise some people.

He didn't even begin to approach redemption as a player, IMO. I'd trade that winning kick against Iowa for any of the choke jobs that cost us the North.
If this kid can kick better than 1/9, he can win our starting job this year.
Re: First Post - New Preferred Walk-on Kicker - Chris Moore
I would be very happy if he works out to be an excfellent kicker for Iowa State. At the very least, the coaches wouldn't have to spend time and resources recruiting one for tyhe '12 class. Not to mention eliminating the uncertainty that has plagued the team at the position since the days of, say, Ty Stewart. Welcome to Iowa State!
BTW--where do his grandparents live?
Re: First Post - New Preferred Walk-on Kicker - Chris Moore
I think this guy has a good shot. If he shows consistency in making kicks (which we haven't had in forever) he can be the starter at some point. I love our Texas players up here!

Thanks for the info! He definitely looks like he has a leg on him! As said before, Kicker is a very inconsistent position for ISU (I tend to think of Yelk and all of his facepalm moments) and has been for a while, he will definitely get his opportunity to compete in the next few years. Best of luck to him and Welcome to CF.
