Will Iowa State Win A National Championship?
Just kind of curious whether fellow fanatic honestly believe that one day our beloved Cyclone of Iowa State University will win a National Championship in football. I'm not talking about this year or next year. I'm not even talking about in 10 years. Realistically, does any one think within the next century we can compete with any team in the country and win 10 games a year consistently? Is it possible? I understand National Championship are bought, but will we ever be able to dump money into our program like the big boys such as Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Florida?
There are not many crowds or places in the country that have a better impact on the game than at Iowa State. The Cyclone fans are truly a sixth man. The place is so loud and always a fantastic crowd." - Former Kansas and current North Carolina head coach Roy Williams -

I certainly believe it's possible. Not likely any time soon, but all it takes is the perfect storm (Cyclone?) over a few years with the right coach, recruiting, and luck.

If ISU can keep a solid coaching staff together for ten plus years, the 'Clones may just be able to pull off a NC run.

CPR promised a conference championship at some point, so I at least expect that to happen.

Re: Will Iowa State Win A National Championship?
Iowa State will never win a NC in football with the current BCS system. Even if they somehow managed to go 12-0 someday and were the only undefeated team that season from a BCS conference, they would still probably fall behind any of the top schools with 1 loss from the SEC/Big 10/Pac12. Then you still have to compete with the Independents like TCU or Boise who could even go before ISU. It would take a truly miraculous season, many things would have to happen outside of Iowa State's control.
Kansas came somewhat close. 2007 was the type of crazy year it would take for ISU to get in, but a 11-1 KU team was still left out due to their weak schedule and a 2 loss SEC team and 1 loss Big Ten team were picked over them. If Iowa State were to go undefeated, they would have at least had to beaten OU and Texas with the current round robin scheduling which would help. Kansas played neither in 07.
All the more reasons why our current system is a joke, it will always favor the big name schools. Iowa State would stand a much better chance of winning a NC with a 8 or 16 team playoff. I'm not so sure what system would favor Iowa more.
Thankfully I doubt our current system will be around FOREVER. It may not happen for awhile, but I imagine someday there will be a playoff.

Re: Will Iowa State Win A National Championship?
If ISU goes 12-0 in the Big 12, there isn't a single 1 loss team that would jump it.
That said, I don't foresee ISU ever going 12-0.
Remember that in 2007, a Big East team was set to play for the NC if they finished with 1 loss against an undefeated Big 12 team (Mizzou), but that Big East team ended up with 2 losses, and that Big 12 team ended up w/a CCG loss. If a 1 loss Big East team can be ahead of a 1 loss Big 10 team and 2 loss SEC team, an undefeated Big 12 team would be the top of the heap.

If there was a playoff maybe, if not, then we wouldn't be in the NC game even if we went undefeated.

Re: Will Iowa State Win A National Championship?
As much as I would love to see ISU win a BCS title, the deck is so stacked against any non-traditional power/media darling that I just don't ever foresee it happening. The last time there was a "first time" NCAA/BCS "champion" was 1996-97, when Florida won it, which predates the BCS. Prior to that it was 1992-93 Florida St, the 1990-91 Colorado, 1984-85 BYU, and 1983-84 Miami.
And it's not just ISU - I don't feel like doing the research, but I'd place a lot of money on the fact that the number of BCS teams that can't claim a national title (and I lump Iowa into this group, despite the one title that they do "claim") far outnumbers those that do claim a national title.
It wouldn't be just ISU that would stun me if they ever won a national title - I'd be stunned if there was ever a "new" champion ever again. The BCS deck is just too far stacked in favor of its favorites.

Re: Will Iowa State Win A National Championship?
Some of you think there is a better chance of us being a top 10 team at the end of the season and then winning 4-5 consecutive road games against other top 10 teams, then there is of us have a perfect record and winning one game against what should be nearly equal competition?
If ISU won't make it to the BCS championship as an undefeated team from a major conference, then we would also be a bottom seed in any playoff. How many bottom seeds have won the Super Bowl? The World Series? The NBA championship? Or do we say "we played for the championship!" when even though we got knocked out in the first round?
I'm not necessarily defending the BCS, but I don't see how a playoff is more beneficial to ISU.

The BCS deck is just too far stacked in favor of its favorites. The BCS can only pick from a small pool of undefeated or 1 loss teams. Where do you think the teams from a playoff are going to come from? Lottery? If you win your conference, you are probably in contention for the BCS anyway. If you win the conference but aren't ranked in the top 15, do you really deserve a "shot" at the championship?

What does your response have to do with mine? The NCAA hasn't seen a "new" champion in roughly 15 years now. I simply stated I doubt ISU ever wins a national championship simply because I doubt we EVER see a "new" champion ever again.
When I refer to the deck being stacked against ISU, I'm not just referring to the BCS - the deck would still be stacked against ISU even with a credible national championship tournament. I'm referring to how the "traditional" schools always get the best talent, perhaps committing violations in the process that the NCAA continuously turns blind eyes to until the media forces them into responding (see OSU and USC) - and even then the "damage" isn't permanent.

I don't believe so, however, it will only take one perfect season. Spite the lack of success at Iowa State, we still play in the Big 12 and a perfect season will undoubtedly mean a title appearance.

Re: Will Iowa State Win A National Championship?
How stupid does is look for fans of a team who haven't won a conference championship in 100 years to talk about a national championship? Quite stupid IMO.

In the current structure of NCAA Football, no.
