Gene's book with spoilers
I gotta say it's not a good read. I thought hearing his side might be nice, but it's really nothing new. He spoke generally well about ISU. What I got out of it: - The ISU job wasn't really anything that interested him, but it would be good practice for future HC interviews.
- JP convinced him to take the job. JP said all the right things.
- He felt welcomed. Liked Iowa, Ames, and the fans.
- For 2 years he laid the foundation, just didn't win.
- JP wanted to give him a fresh 6 year contract despite not winning.
- Auburn went after him. Dream job.
- He wanted to talk to JP about leaving, but JP declined.
- He could only talk to the players for 5 mins and couldn't take questions because the players were upset. JP's fault.
- Fans were mad. JP's fault.
- Friends were mad so they had to leave quick. JP's fault.
- He had to get his family out of town because who knows what would happen to his kids with everyone upset. JP's fault.
- Basically JP was perfect for 2 years and then totally wrong for 2 days. Had JP not handled things so badly he would have had a parade and keys to the town before leaving.
- ISU fans gave him a poor sendoff at the airport.
- Auburn fans welcomed him at the airport. Seems like I remember some people not so happy...

"Welcomed" can mean many things.
They did show some video where he looked pretty welcome. That might have been a very selected audience there to welcome him.

He did mention seeing welcome signs specifically. I remember ESPN running some not welcoming signs and at least one heckler that he heard.

What did he expect for a send off ? Crowds of people saying thanks for everything?
Auburn fans surely welcomed him at airport.

I remember his welcome pretty well. It was an epic day here on the old Interwebz.

How exactly did he pin all of those things on JP?

JP sent him a letter from JP's house to his house, but Chiz left it to his wife to talk to JP.

Here is some footage from his actual arrival. Sorry to rub salt in the wound. I did like the quote that goes something like "you gotta bring in good kids". $200,000 sure does a great job of bringing them in.

Re: Gene's book with spoilers
Did he write about the fact that he hired the godfather of his daughters to be his offensive coordinator at ISU, then demote him, then not take him with him to Auburn when even Wayne Bolt got a job with him?

He mentioned a coach being that, standing at his wedding, and helping him through a tough funeral. He said he hurt some friendships by not taking them to Auburn. Basically said that at 5-19 he was a hard sell, but if he took any ISU coaches they would be a nearly impossible sell to Auburn fans. Since then he has mended these friendships (he says).
He also went into Auburn and told the coaches there they were fired. They were friends and former colleagues. He then kept 3 of the twenty some coaches.
