North Texas Game & Tailgate to Watch Coach Mac
I want to invite all Cyclone fans to an event that the ISU Alumni Association of Dallas/Fort Worth is putting on. We are attending a University of North Texas football game to watch Coach Mac in his new job as head coach! We have selected the Saturday, September 24 game against the University of Indiana. Iowa State does not play on this day. We are planning on purchasing tickets together to take advantage of group pricing through UNT. Reserved tickets for this game will be $32 and can be paid for through the ISUAA website. There is no limit to the tickets you may order. . .so please invite your friends! We are also tentatively planning an informal tailgate for those who wish to take part, but details on that will be released on a later date. Our ticket orders are due in mid-August, so we need to have an RSVP and payment by August 11. WHO’S INVITED: All ISU alumni, family, and friends WHERE: University of North Texas Football Stadium, Denton, Texas (30 minutes north of DFW) WHEN: Saturday, September 24, 6 p.m. kickoff (tailgate time TBA) COST: Tickets are $32/person and can be purchased through the ISUAA If you have any questions, email us at dfwcyclones@gmail.com. Thanks! Matt Ludwig President, ISUAA of DFW -

Obviously the DFW Chapter is hosting this, but I would highly encourage a similar event in Iowa City when North Texas plays Iowa in a couple years.

Austen - Are you going to join us? You and Chris talked about it on your podcast last week. Chris sounds pretty unlikely to be able to make it but you seem much more likely to join us.

More power to you guys, but I wouldn't really want to go root for UNT and a coach that ISU fired. I respect what he did at ISU, but he did get paid pretty well for doing it and in the end, couldn't get the job done.

I love Coach Mac! Hope this is a great success!!

Re: North Texas Game & Tailgate to Watch Coach Mac
Let me know as this closer together and I will see you guys there. I would recommend that you contact the guys at gomeangreen.com and they will help coordinate your meet up tailgate. They should be able to help with many of the logistics questions.
As far as the new stadium goes, you guys will be able to see the before and after with the old stadium still in use as a track complex across from the new one. Hope to see you guys there.

Re: North Texas Game & Tailgate to Watch Coach Mac
That's great to see. Coach Mac couldn't take us to the next level, but he got us to a higher level than where we were when he took the job. He did NOT get fired (as some like to suggest) but instead, he agreed to resign seeing that it was best for all parties concerned to make a change. Finally, even after he resigned, he still made appearances on the National Cyclone Club luncheon in Des Moines (and I assume other places too?). Not too many coaches would have that type of class.
I was ready for Coach Mac to move on, but I will always appreciate all he did for ISU and if this event was closer, would be happy to attend.

I expect Iowa will make a large deal over this one, especially if Fry is still alive. Kirk and Dan back in the same stadium, both students of Fry, plus North Texas in town which was Fry's gig before landing the Iowa job.

Dan McCarney put ISU football back on the map. He took a terrible program to the AP Top Ten. Show some respect.

Good luck to him....but all my time/efforts is following the current ISU squad.

I would hardly pat our backs for our journey to the AP top Ten. We just cracked the list at #9. We stayed there for one week. In our lone appearance as a top 10 team, we lost 49-3 on national television on our way to going 3-16 in our next 19 games. We followed this up by choking away the North title in back to back seasons. And then for his big exit, Dan went 4-8, beating Mizzou in a nail-biter in his final game to avoid going out with a winless conference campaign.
Dan made some improvements, but I would hardly say he put us on the map. Outside of the ISU fanbase, I don't think the reputation of our program has changed much at all. Those fans that don't still confuse us with the hawks, the buckeyes, or who knows what else would still identify us as a BCS bottom feeder.
It just seems to me like a lot of the Dan worship around here is more a reflection on the abysmal history of our program than it is on any accomplishments of Dan's. He got us to the doorstep a few times, but to me the legacy is more our continued, almost comical inability, to step through. So we finally beat Iowa and we went to a couple bowl games (that wouldn't have existed 20 years ago), and that was a good time, but it certainly didn't catapult us to a new level. Chizik couldn't do anything the following two years, and while we have high hopes for CPR, he has yet to show that the foundation was set for bigger things either.
I find the whole idea of an ISUAA sponsored event to go to a game not involving ISU to support a coach that was basically forced to resign from ISU just a little bit odd. I'm not going to say not to go, Dan clearly loved ISU and gave us his all and I respect that. But I honestly would be shocked if there are examples of other schools doing something at all like this.

I understand the sentiment voiced by Frak, and I wouldn't make a special trip to Dallas for it, but if I lived in the DFW area I could think of much worse ways to spend a Saturday when ISU isn't playing.

Back on the map? Was ISU ever on the map? He was a good coach for ISU and has since moved on. I would suggest ISU fans do the same.

Re: North Texas Game & Tailgate to Watch Coach Mac
Heres an idea, take the money your were going to spend on tickets to the game and donate it to Iowa State athletics, it's embarrassing to think an ISU Alumni Assoc. is putting on an event that doesnt involve Iowa State
