My school went on a 5.0 GPA system, and even then, you could get above a 5.0 because if you took honors classes, the grading scale added one point to your GPA. So an A in an honors class was a 6.0, but an A in the regular class was a 5.0. I never understood why they did it.

Wow, I might be showing my age here. We had AP courses but they weren't weighted.

It depends on the school. When I graduated high school in 2008, AP courses weren't weighted.

In my high school you could go above 4.0 via AP classes as well. 5.0 being the absolute highest.
They do it because an A in AP Calculus should carry more merit than an A in Home Economics.
