I hope these young men realize the weight they carry on their shoulders
I don't want to sound like a "world is ending" type of person, but with the ever-changing landscape of college football, the success of our team is even more important.
While it's not fair to hold our viability in a major conference on just the members of one team, it's unfortunately the way it is. The success or failures of this team in the next few years could well determine not only our ability to stay in a major conference, but the financial ability of our university as well.
I don't ask these men to pull miracles, I just ask them to give 100 percent from whistle to whistle on every snap, because a lot of times hard work and perserverance will overcome unmotivated talent in a matchup.
Hit 'em hard, every yard, Cyclones!

Doesn't matter if we go undefeated/winless.
it is the number of tv sets we offer and that is not much.

Re: I hope these young men realize the weight they carry on their shoulders
That's ridiculous. We could win the Orange Bowl (ala Kansas) and still be screwed due to location.
Unless we can pull off like 4 BCS games in a row, nothing about the national perception of ISU is going to change.
Just let them go out and have fun...win or lose.
Go State.

What a perfectly sane stance to take on this season.

Re: I hope these young men realize the weight they carry on their shoulders
Success DOES matter, if anything, a stronger Big XII can create a more stable Big XII, especially if the conference wants to expand to 12 teams at some point. A stronger conference will make it more easy to get better teams, creating an even stronger conference and more money. I realize it all depends on Texas, but as long as they're making money, they're happy.

Re: I hope these young men realize the weight they carry on their shoulders
The OP's sentiment is on. While we may never bring a lot of TV sets (unless we start peeling BCS bowl wins off right and left), we must do everything in our power (which may not be much) to increase our athletics brand and identity. Look what 2.5 good years of football did for the perception of the KU football program. They suck! Yet most people point at us, when discussing the worst big 12 football program.
Again, we have to do everything in our power to increase brand and identity. We may still be screwed, but if we are to save ourself - it will be in the event of success.

Re: I hope these young men realize the weight they carry on their shoulders
I believe the OP hit the nail on the head here. ISU has everything required to be in a major conference, except perception. Our facilities and attendance are in line with the the top universities in the US, outside the SEC & Texas. Our major downfall is when you factor in history and national perception. If this group of Clones continue to exceed expectations and get a few shock the world moments could go a long ways for our future. Now is the time to be getting noticed.

Re: I hope these young men realize the weight they carry on their shoulders
I don't. I hope that they play like it's a game, and have fun. Because that's what it all boils down to.
Of course, if that happens, everything else will fall into place.
We got a new Marshall here in town, and his name's Paul Rhoads, and the times, they is a'changin'.

Wins and loses have about as much to do with realignment as academics. Maybe less.

Maybe if we had really had that early 2000's hot streak that we probably should have had it would have made a difference. Any success we have now will be too little too late to really make a difference.

At that level, you can get in on wins and losses. That level of course, is a Top 10 all-time program.

Re: I hope these young men realize the weight they carry on their shoulders
The landscape of college football is going to be 4 major mega conferences, the writing is on the wall. This push last year by Texas was just a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. We (the Big XII) are the newest of all the major conferences, this is way why we are being dismantled and others majors are not! Just except the fate and quit complaining. WE will be in the Big East in a few years!!
