The NCAA needs to be taxed. Coaches shouldn't earn more than professors at state schools.

Im glad OU will make a decison with in the next couple of weeks so that everyone knows what is going to happen and this whole conference realingment will take on 16 team conference talk or be done.

For the people calling for the tax, how exactly would it work? Most athletic departments don't make money, so there would be no income to tax. The ones that do operate in the black either carry a surplus or contribute to their school's general fund. If you tax the profit, it will just come out of the general fund. I don't see the athletic department being affected. In fact, it could backfire. The schools with the surplus could just spend more on athletics to avoid it being taxed.

What about removing tax-exempt status on athletic donations?

Take a cut out of all the millions T. Boone Pickens is throwing in.

Or require that for every $1M an individual donated to the athletic department, $500K (or 250K or whatever) must be donated to the general fund to remain as a tax write-off.

You want to give 5 mil so your name can be on the stadium plaza? Fine...give another mil to the scholarship fund or that 5 million is not going to count as a write off.

The arms race is getting a little out of hand, maybe this way a little good could come out of it.

Probably just like your income tax. Certain things (like scholarships, food costs for athletes, money turned back to the general fund) would be deductible. Other things, (like adding supermegajumbotron and luxury boxes to the stadium, and more playstations and leather chairs to the locker room, or building the new pampered-athlete practice facility) would not be deductible.

I don't necessarily disagree but a good football coach is much less replaceable than a good professor. There is just so much money in college athletics that's how it is. Also, I would be willing to bet a head football coach's life is much much more taxing than most professors.

Texas sucks, but I do like the fact that legislature might tell A&M to stay put. They should cancel the longhorn network. Dan Bebe needs to find out what is ******* everyone off about this conference, and do something about it.

In all fairness, the t.v. money should be taxed prior to it being distributed to each school in the conference. Tier 1 rights for the SEC is worth Billions with a B and none of it is taxed. Last I heard we have a minor deficit problem in this country -- somewhere to the tune of 14.5 Trillion dollars. It takes 25% of our tax dollars to pay just the interest on that monster and we're not taxing t.v. dollars. Meanwhile the schools receiving this money -- the Auburns, Miami's, and Ohio States of the world are corrupt as hell. Not right.

Good points. The donation part is the only place I can think of where the tax status can really be changed. My only concern is how it affects the smaller schools. Can you make rules like that that apply to Texas or Oklahoma State, but not to UNI or even DIII schools? I'd hate to see donations for those schools to decrease as many are struggling with what they have now.

this is crap...Texas Legislators slowing things down? who the hell is calling the shots on all of this? If Congress can get involved in MLB, then they sure as heck can get involved in Collegiate Sports, they need to 1) Tax Revenues beyond a reasonable exemption per athlete for expenses at a high rate and 2) put an end to this rich get richer and poor get left behind by mandating that all current BCS Teams will be included in BCS Conferences, this would require the Senators from States like Iowa, Kansas and some of the Big East to show some initiative on this front...

Being Iowa State kind of feels like being in a relationship with a really hot girl that is cheating on you , you know she will eventually leave but its too good to leave it before she does...let her go and find the one you want to marry.
