Re: Ferentz Quote on the Jack
JTS gets loud, but it doesn't compare to the Shoe, not many place do. It gets so loud it hurts.

KF is cool in my book. Not as cool as Hoiball or CPR, but cooler than most coaches.

Re: Ferentz Quote on the Jack
Pretty much everyone has covered it already, but I'll agree anyway: The Big House just isn't built well to hold sound. As mentioned, Carver without a roof.
Even when Michigan was rallying last fall against the Hawks, it never got as loud as the 4th quarter at Kinnick against Wisky (the loudest I've ever heard Kinnick), and it wasn't even close.
Never been to OSU, but I want to go before long. PSU too. Wisky I plan on seeing the very next time we play in Madison. All of those stadiums are practically vertical, and really trap the noise.

Re: Ferentz Quote on the Jack
Time for some engineering reasoning for Captain Kirks statement. It's been a number of years since I took my one and only engineering acoustics class at ISU, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
My whole argument is based off a sound power equation you can find on Wikipedia, but this is the reader's digest version of the math involved:
-Sound power relative to what we perceive as "loudness" is a logarithmic relationship. What we humans subjectively interpret as loudness can be objectively measured as sound pressure.
-The human ear subjectively interprets a sound as "twice as loud" when it is amplified by +10dB. However, given the log relationship between sound power and pressure, simply doubling sound power doesn't result in a +10dB change, it only results in +3dB.
So, I guess the point I'm trying to make is, the difference between 50,000 and 100,000 screaming fans (i.e. just doubling the sound power) would only result in a perceived human loudness increase of only +3dB. A third of what we perceive as true "doubling." All other factors being equal, of course (stadium, ambient conditions, etc.).
I'm sure Ferentz would have made this point had the presser not ended so soon...I was pumped that I finally found a use for this part of my education so I wanted to enlighten everyone. It's been a while since I've studied this, so someone feel free to correct me. This is also good knowledge to have when some BestBuy sales jackoff tries to bend you over on a stereo system...

Re: Ferentz Quote on the Jack
Been to PSU, Michigan and Wisconsin. Also been to Jack Trice 2 times.
It gets loud at JT, but not like PSU or Wisconsin(or Kinnick, for that matter). Can't speak for OSU, never been to a game there.
For a stadium that only holds 55,000 or so, it holds its own as far as sound.
And like others have mentioned, Michigan doesn't hold sound well at all.

Re: Ferentz Quote on the Jack
Once the south endzone gets bowled in, I expect the noise levels to increase big time.

but i agree it would help trap the noise, especially if the students were in the south end.

Re: Ferentz Quote on the Jack
I remember Walden saying that double level stadiums are tremendously louder than equal sized bowl stadiums. Said the sound gets aimed at the field better and doesn't escape like some have said happens at the big house.
Then again it was walden, so I'm not guaranteeing it's true.

Re: Ferentz Quote on the Jack
I've been to Kinnick, Kyle Field, Whisky, and Memorial Stadium at Lincoln, and I will say that Kinnick is loud, but not as loud as my brother who is a U of I grad always perceived it, I wouldnt put it much above JTS, However I am always close to the student section at JTS. Memorial stadium is hands down the loudest stadium I've been in, Especially experiencing taking them into 2OT and beating them, None of the other stadiums I've been to touch it.
Problem at JTS is that most of the noise is coming from a very small number of fans, If everyone would get into it, It would be awesome. Happens every now and then, but not every 3rd down.

Re: Ferentz Quote on the Jack
If I were to note one difference in sound in Kinnick vs JT, it would be that their fans make noise at all times on defense, not just on 3rd down.

From the two games that I have been to Kinnick (vs. Arizona 2009 and vs. ISU 2010) I would definately put it above JTS. There really is no doubt that Kinnick is louder. They also seat 20,000 more than us and there are no open corners on the stadium where sound is lost.

PSU, OSU, Wisky, and Iowa are all louder than the Big House. The sound goes straight up and out of the stadium. OSU, PSU and Iowa all have stadiums that are built so that the sound shakes the stadium. I have been to a number of games at Jack Trice and although it does not get crazy loud, it is still a good and intimidating environment.
The Big House is a tremendous venue but the intimidation is not because of the deafining crowd noise. It is because it is such a huge venue and historically they have had a better team than most teams that come to play. My brother-in-law and I had to take turns during "commercial breaks" sitting down. The atmosphere is pretty cool, but other than that the stadium isn't the best. The Big House is much louder now with the new suite addition. I would have to look up the sound tests but those things made it much louder.

Also, as previously mentioned by another poster, Kinnick is loud all the time on defense, not just on third down. It just gets amped up a couple notches on third down. That can affect a person's perception on how loud the place actually is.
