I was there last season. I didn't think it was as loud as Kinnick at its best. Though to be fair, a lot of fans had seen enough of Rich Rod that they weren't all that enthused. Perhaps with a more traditional (meaning good) Michigan team, it would be louder than Kinnick (with the suite additions).

Yes, you are correct. I should have been more clear about that. There is definately a lot less sound that is lost from the corners at Kinnick though.

I don't think it's as loud as Kinnick but I would think that the visual, at least initially is intimidating. I haven't been there but how shocking is it to just see how large it is?
    I'm on Twitter too: Tre4ISU

Also the distance of the fans from the field also would make the field seem louder. I've never been to Kinnick but the stands look like they are almost on top of the field.

I was blown away by the place. We got there VERY early, and the stands were almost empty. I couldn't believe how big the place was. I think part of the awe was due to the fact that I've got respect for college football in general, so there was a certain degree of nostalgia.

That's because they are. The front row along the sideline is seriously less than 10 yards from the edge of the field. Very claustrophobic.

KF is not the guy who's going to call your team a bad team, or call your stadium a slightly upgraded high school stadium. If you ask him about his opponents, he's always played them up, regardless of how good they are. Even after we've crushed opponents, he'll talk about how good they really were, but some how we managed to be slightly better. It's just coach speak.

That said, JT is likely louder (at least during Iowa-ISU games) than the Big Mausoleum. It's a fact that Michigan Stadium is the quietest 100k+ stadium in the world. It is highly unlikely, however, that JT is as loud as Ohio Stadium or Beaver Stadium. I know people talk about how Kinnick is supposed to be as loud as those two, but I don't buy it.

I think Kinnick, at its best (think Wisky last year), can match up with an average day in Columbus or Happy Valley.

But those two stadiums, at THEIR best, cannot be matched by any stadium that seats less than 90,000.

Chad Greeenway was quoted once saying that JTS is as tough as a place to play as tOSU or anywhere in the big 10, And i believe that was before we beat them in 05

    1. A lot of times, players buy into the coach's mentality.
    2. "As tough" doesn't necessarily mean "as loud", at least not in a rivalry.

As Hyde mentioned today, he heard plenty of stuff at JTS in 2009 that you don't typically hear at a game as a player. Stuff that he wouldn't repeat for the press. That comes with a rivalry, and I don't get the feeling that Ohio State fans have that kind of vitriol reserved for the Hawks. For Michigan? Absolutely. But not Iowa.

So perhaps they feel it's right up there in terms of toughness, but it's a different kind of toughness than what Iowa experiences at The Shoe.

I've heard the Big House is actually fairly quiet....from my perspective on the couch and never having been to these stadiums I would rate their loudness in this order:

    Wisconsin
    Ohio State
    Penn State

All other stadiums in the Big X are a step behind these three.
