Hope Talk Like This Doesn't Distract Anyone Tomorrow
Hansen: Iowa State will be flat broke if TV cash disappears | The Des Moines Register | DesMoinesRegister.com
"Do you know what happens to Iowa State if the Big 12 goes kaput and ISU’s chunk of the TV swag disappears?"
Answer:
“They become Northern Iowa with a $5 million scoreboard,” says Michael Gartner, who recently left his position on the Board of Regents. “Without that money, they’re dead in the water. No way they can run an athletic department then without a subsidy. I bet it would be a $10 million subsidy, too.”

good to see Hansen is picking up where he left off with his sports writing. It's sad that I miss Keeler.

I might be distracted.
But I'm not one of the players, so that's probably OK then.

That is where lawyers step in...

The article is pretty spot on, IMO. Gartner's quote is a tad hasty, but it could be true.
Re: Hope Talk Like This Doesn't Distract Anyone Tomorrow
Don't kill the messenger. The truth hurts. The players need to focus on one thing at a time, and that's winning their next game. It is what it is.
:-)
Re: Hope Talk Like This Doesn't Distract Anyone Tomorrow
I can agree with the article if we fall out of the BCS but we wouldn't lose that much money if we went to the Big East.
Re: Hope Talk Like This Doesn't Distract Anyone Tomorrow
I don't necessarily like the tone either, BUT if it gets more people paying attention to what is going on and gets them more active in the issue, then it is a good thing. We need to let our BOR, university leaders, and anyone with a say in the matter know how important this could be to ISU's future.
As someone said, "there is no such thing as bad publicity".

Does the Rag really pay someone just to spout the obvious? Losing TV money would put a major hurting on every D1 school.

What truth? "Dead in the water", um no. Gartner's comments assume there's no plan "B". Maybe there's not but he sure as hell doesn't know that. Other FBS AD's and conference leaders recognize ISU's value as a partner. Too bad Hansen doesn't do a story about that. I won't hold my breath...
Re: Hope Talk Like This Doesn't Distract Anyone Tomorrow
Didn't Gartner want to turn ISU (and UNI) into an extension of Iowa in the 80's? Don't take anything he says as the truth. No way ISU ever becomes UNI with a $5,000,000 scoreboard. ISU will still be part of the 'big boy' club.
Re: Hope Talk Like This Doesn't Distract Anyone Tomorrow
I think that an article like this is needed so it gets people to think about the actual ramifications if Iowa State is not in a BCS conference. Some people seem either to want ISU to be in a non-bcs conference and other people act like it wouldn't be a big deal. This is a huge deal for ISU and maybe putting the kind of money ISU stands to lose in the spotlight, even if it is a worst case sceneraio, will get more people to realize the seriousness of the situation for the university and athletic program.

I am sure that this will be the only thing on my mind after kickoff tomorrow.

This is the same dude that's always ******** about the BoR, despite his tenure on it and his inability to change things, or to turn around and whine about the conditions he created or oversaw.
