Tailgating at ISU
I can't tell you how many Iowa fans made the comment about how the tailgating setup and the people are far superior to that around Kinnick! I was amazed. Some of the most die hard Iowa fans I know were so complimentary. They even said that after the game our fans were congratulatory and kind while they realized their fans were a**holes. Some of you may have seen the article from the long time sportswriter at Colorado who was writing about each stadium/environment as CU was winding down their affiliation with the Big 12. He said the same...ISU had the BEST tailgating in the Big 12.

Re: Tailgating at ISU
Funny tailgating related story. My buddy and I had a parking pass for C5, but circumstances forced to leave pretty late for the game Saturday morning. By time we got there the lot was basically full as we searched for an empty spot. As we were maneuvering through our 4th or 5th row we get stuck behind a big white SUV that has stopped in the lane. While we are wondering why the hell they are stopped a drunk middle-aged woman runs up from the tailgate bus that is in the parking spot to our left. At the window she says, "We have our table set up in the next spot. We know we're going to have to give it up. The truck in front of you is full of hawk fans though, and we are not going to let them ******* park next to us. If you can squeeze past them into the spot, we'll help and it's yours." So as the driver ahead of us is busy trying to tell the parking guys to make them clear their table, we quietly crept behind them and took the spot. It was pretty funny and we got some free beer from their tailgate out of the deal as well.

Re: Tailgating at ISU
I think the tailgating as you move away from Kinnick is just as good as the tailgating at JTS. But ISU's tailgating is better because they take that atmosphere and put it right across the street on all sides of the stadium. Right next door is for the hoity toity donors at Iowa.
Michigan was similar, in that a VERY large portion of the tailgating happens at the golf course right across the street. It was a lot more sterile than ISU, but you didn't have to be high class to be there.
I especially loved the student tailgating lot. That's just an awesome touch that I wish we had in Iowa City.

This weekend was her first tailgate in Ames. I told her we had the best around, but of course she thought that was flat out impossible. She thought our tailgating sucked because there wasn't a bar within walking distance. I responded, "That's not tailgating- that's going to a bar." She'll never admit it, but I know she was impressed. -

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone. -
Re: Tailgating at ISU
Our tailgating is so powerful it fried the motherboard on a ESPN web server several years back when it was hosting a poll about the nation's best tailgating, and rendered the poll unusable.

Re: Tailgating at ISU
JTS is better because you don't have to walk 3 miles... And you won't get stabbed like you might in IC.

I agree with the "bar" analogy. We wound up in the public lot NW of Kinnick last year, which is about like Hilton parking but more cramped. The big difference I noticed that there's a lot more drinking than eating for hok games. Drinking is certainly a big part of the Cyclone landscape on game day, but almost everyone at Ames does some cooking. That didn't seem to be the case in i.c.
