Big 12 Big East merger gaining steam.

Can someone help me understand how this merger might look? What teams are going to be left in the Big East? Will this be good for us? Thanks, I have been following the drama, but I don't know too much about the BE.

What are their best teams that havent already left to the ACC or are going to leave somewhere else? Will we take a huge hit financially? Could this work out better for us because of the exit fees? How many members need to be here for us to get exit fees?

Thanks for helping, I think we are alright, but I just have some questions (as I'm sure everyone does.) Please try to keep this on topic, and try to keep Twitter things out of this unless they have links to websites.

Re: Big 12 Big East merger gaining steam.

Best case scenario for a merger would be:

    East:
    West Virginia
    Connecticut
    Rutgers
    Louisville
    Cincinnati
    South Florida

    West:
    Iowa State
    Kansas
    Kansas State
    Missouri
    Baylor
    TCU

Of course some of those schools are looking to go elsewhere as well right now.

I still think whatever it ends up being will only be a 2-3 year stop gap until either the SEC or Big Ten starts looking to expand again. You're telling me that the Pac-16 and ACC are both going to have divisions the size of the old Big East and there won't be any pressure applied to the BCS to guarantee them more than 1 BCS bid? If that becomes the case suddenly I don't see the Big Ten and SEC being content at 12 or 14.

Yeah, that actually wouldn't be to bad of a conference. But chances are Missouri and/or West Virginia will get picked up by someone, and that will be a huge blow.

Re: Big 12 Big East merger gaining steam.

It may be our ticket but the only issue I have with it is that it seems like another conference held together by duct tape. Assuming Okie, Okie St, Texas, and TTech to the Pac-16 and A&M to the SEC and assuming the ACC goes ahead and takes UConn and Rutgers you have two conferences built up to 16 teams. The SEC will at least add one, signs point to Mizzou or WV. So now we have the ACC and Pac-16 at 16 teams. The SEC at 14 teams, the B1G at 12, and then the Big East/12 merger at nine (ISU, Baylor, Kansas, KSU, Louisville, Cincy, USF, TCU, and then either Mizzou/WV).

The issue becomes how long can it last before the SEC decides to add two more or the B1G decides to add 2 or 4? This merger is too weak to try to add more because the bigger conferences are either entrenched or have too big of an exit fee to pick off their teams and if/when the SEC and B1G decide to expand this new conference is target numero uno.

Yea, except when this one gets torn apart Iowa State will be sitting pretty good for a Big Ten invite because the ACC will have all their east coast expansion options locked down. If we HAD to go to 16 team super-conferences than the ACC unintentionally did Iowa State a big favor by pillaging the Big East before the Big Ten could.

I'm expecting the Big East merger to be the option that actually happens. I'm OK with it.

It's not perfect, but it's better than some of the frightened theories people have had.

This. It was one thing we didn't see coming. Very good for ISU IMO if the Big10 decides to expand.

Yea. The two things that will suck about it are:
    1) We're probably done with any big capital projects for a few years because I doubt the tv money will be as much as we were anticipating going into this year.
    2) We'll probably take some legitimate ribbing from Hawk fans about our crappy conference.

However, it will still be BCS, we'll probably win more, I don't think it will be permanent, and hopefully it's a better springboard for ISU than the Big XII has been.

EDIT: Also, we'll get a few years of GREAT basketball out of the deal.

Re: Big 12 Big East merger gaining steam.

This would still be looked at as the weakest BCS football conference, although I'm not sure how much stronger the ACC gets with the teams it adds. You'd still have a couple of elite teams with about 12 mediocre ones. IMO it wouldn't be much of an upgrade to strength of schedule when you play only your division teams made up of mostly average teams, then maybe a conference championship game. Va Tech is still an almost automatic Orange bowl team in the new look acc
