Right.
Chances are, you'd only have Rutgers, Kansas, and Iowa State remaining from that list. Missouri is probably going to the SEC, unless the Big Ten offers a spot first.
It's possible, however, that ND is just posturing for the best possible deal by playing the ACC against the Big Ten.
From Andy Katz story, reading between the lines, the ACC is holding two spots open for TX and KU (or MO). If they don't come, then Rutgers and UConn take those spots. It seems impractical for TX to leave Tech behind, but the ACC won't take Tech. So, that means TX goes to the PAC.
Throwing ND in the mix, clouds things a bit. Who does ACC take with ND? Probably UConn, according to Jim Boeheim. Which is why Rutgers probably stays on the table for the Big Ten.
Just thinking out loud here, but I don't see this as great news for Iowa State.
I don't think it's entirely bad. But not great. Reason being, if Iowa State was ever going to sneak into the Big Ten, it would be because they've added some tremendous value (Notre Dame or Texas) and that money was no longer a worry.
If the Big Ten whiffs on Notre Dame and Texas, then acquiring more valuable properties (hate to use that word but that's basically what we're talking about here) even more important. Unfortunately, Iowa State isn't considered to be valuable.
Who knows? This crap all changes by the minute anyway. Just my two cents.
Part of me thinks this is ND acting out of spite towards the B1G. Part of me thinks it's some sort of move for leverage in the off chance they actually do want to join us.
I think ND would be comfortable with the schools in the ACC, tbh. Notre Dame may be in favor of joining the conference due to the strong research links, but I think ideology may also get involved (embryonic stem cell research, for one). /shrugs
ISU needs ND in the Big 10, because we need a school that brings in enough additional revenue to the league to off set what ISU would take so the current member schools don't make less money then they are now.
How can ND be forced to give up independent status?
I'm not sure what makes anybody think a conference will ever have enough money, given the current mentality. If the decision is made solely on money, ISU is never getting in the B1G.
If they decide that regionalness and academics is important, then we have a chance.
Which is another way of saying we are never getting into the B1G.
The word from a few Hawk fans down in ACC country (FWIW) is that the general opinion down there is that this is just misinformation. Perhaps Notre Dame is looking to stall the ACC from picking off more Big East teams so that they can get their own house in order first. Because if they don't find a better deal before the Big East loses more teams, they wouldn't have any leverage with the Big Ten.
That's the theory, anyway.
Why would ND need any (more) leverage with the Big 10? They have all they need: not interested.
If ND joins any conference, it will be the ACC. Why would they limit themselves to the Big 10? And the Big 10's open pleading for ND gives ND all the leverage to join when and where they want.
