Impact on Non-Revenue Sports

Is anybody caring about the impact that conference realignment will have on non-revenue sports? Regional conferences allow for reasonable bus travel. It will cost a fortune for non-revenue sport teams to have to travel all over the country. And great regional rivalries in sports other than football are going to be trashed. Even men's basketball powerhouse rivalries could be ended as annual events.

It really seems that we are on the verge of destroying the concept of conferences. If conferences are formed around football TV contracts, then they really aren't conferences anymore. Conferences share institutional similiarities (such as region, size) and a commitment to competition in many sports. None of this seems to be in mind very much these days.

that's why EVERYONE needs to stop buying into ESPN. they are orchestrating this entire thing to put money in their own pockets. they just throw info out there and hope it stirs the pot enough to actually put things in motion. up to this point they haven't been right on anything they have reported. that's why all these conferences are still in tact. the university officials, student-athletes, and fans don't want/can't afford to travel 1500 miles to play volleyball or tennis or field hockey or whatever.

sure the tv contracts for football may bring in more money but schools will also increse their expenses and wind up with the same amount of money if they would have stayed put

Further, TV is a fading media, especially broadcast TV and probably cable TV also. All games of all teams will be streamed on demand in the near future. It is hard to believe that the huge longterm TV contacts are likely to be fulfilled even if the conferences stay together. I predict that there will need to be a new revenue model even for football in the next 10 years.

plus the push for the "super conferences" will never work. it will benefit the top tier teams in each conference while it submarines the lower teams. the lower teams will get bad tv slots which in the long run will lead to less money/exposure/recruiting. how long will the bottom teams hang around getting pummeled before they say screw it and leave looking to better their program rather than be a team that is a sure win every year a al NW, Indiana, Purdue, Vandy, Ole Miss, ORSt, Wash St., etc.

The non-revenue sports are also big winners today!
