if we finish the regular season 8-4 we should be ranked #15 IMO. 4 losses to top 15 teams: OU, OSU, A&M, Baylor. baylor might not be quite that high, but its a road game for us.
but voters would look at that record and rank us (or any team) #25 or so
same effect hypothetically when #1 beats #2 50-49 in 3 overtimes... the next week #2 will fall to #7 or something. when they should just stay at #2

No, too many of the 15-25 have cupcakes. It would take some major loses to get us in. Lets face it. Iowa putting a beat down on ULM isn't going to help us much, nor will UConn over Buffalo. We might move up a spot or two, but the only way I see us moving into the top 25 is by beating Texas.

Possible but not likely. I do think we will get more votes though.

Re: Could ISU break the top 25 without even playing a game?
I think it is more likely we lose votes this week. A lot of people had us in 25th, so if another team catches their eye we drop out.

Wow, I think about two or three answers actually responded to my actual question. I don't care if we will or won't be ranked or if we deserve it or not. I was asking who I should be cheering for in matchups that will help get us there!

Re: Could ISU break the top 25 without even playing a game?
Not really. West Virginia is ahead of us, but if they lose, their drop could push us back. USC is ahead of us, but if they lose, Arizona State might jump us. Arkansas loses to Alabama and their drop could push us back and etc. Originally Posted by cy4prez7 Look at the rankings...look at everyone ahead of us...root against them! Simple as that! -

I would love to see a matchup of the #18 Texas Longhorns coming to Ames, Iowa to play the #25 Iowa State Cyclones.

That's why I asked who to cheer for! I'm so conflicted! Originally Posted by cy4prez7 Any of those drops could also push us up! -

Keep teams like Arizona State ranked (voted) below us down there.
At least the teams on the outside looking in, in the coaches poll will benefit from #24 Georgia Tech playing #25 North Carolina. One of those two will dropout after losing this week.

Re: Could ISU break the top 25 without even playing a game?
Anyone in 26-35 who plays this week and wins probably has a greater chance of being ranked.

But voters would look at that record and rank us (or any team) #25 or so I think I could accept anything in top 25 at 8-4 this season, unless all four of those teams somehow stay ranked very high. Because it's quite possible ISU could go 8-4 without beating anyone who's all that good.
Now, maybe if there's a semi-early loss (like at Missouri) but a win over OU/OSU/A&M — could deserve a slightly higher rank.
As far as rankings go, I just want to keep winning, gradually climb, hopefully play a lot of teams when they have no losses (or maybe 1) and beat a lot of them.
