All told in the history of ISU football, they have played a ranked opponent to start the conference season 18 times. Sadly, the most favorable result occurred in a 1981 trip to Oklahoma where the #20 Cyclones left Norman with a 7-7 tie against the #5 Sooners. The other 17 conference opening games against ranked teams ended with losses for an overall record of 0-17-1.
