Offense improvement

I may be off a little, but I think Jantz threw 2 picks becuase the WR was open and he didn't want to over throw him, and 2 picks that should have been caught (TE & WR). Once the games slow down for him, which I think it is starting to do, SJ will become more confident and eliminate the bad throws. I agree that he may sometimes throw into tight coverage, but sometimes it is the receivers job to go get the ball, OR play defense and break up the play, ie Money down the sideline. Like another poster said, I think we should take the ball first and be a little conservative in the first drive, to let SJ get comfortable and settle in, on what will be one crazy night at JT. All in all, I bet we start to see a more refined SJ this Saturday. Its gonna be a big stage, but I think he'll thrive on that.

He didn't throw many INT's in juco so I don't know if throwing 4 or 5 in a couple games means he is going to continue to throw a lot of picks. I would imagine he is trying to cut down on those INT's through film study and practice. I'm not saying he is GOING to throw alot of INTs. I'm saying there is a possibility he does. You know Steele is not going to stop throwing down field. It's what he likes to do and showed in JUCO, and showed vs Iowa that he can be very good at it. I also don't understand why gunslinger is annoying. It's what he is. He loves to try to make plays with his arm. Nothing wrong with that and I find it exciting.

I think it has to do a lot with his gunslinger mentallity. A lot of times he just sits back there and guns it downfield. Other times he jut slings it out there. When you have a gunslinger willing to take chances like that, you live and die by his gunslingerishness.

I agree with pretty much all of this. Steele has been able to pull us out of holes, and has made plays no one before him (save Seneca) could. He's also gotten more help than his predecessor, but it's pretty obvious that Steele is a better QB than AA.

As you point out, it says a lot about our entire team. Rhoads has said time and again that this is his best team and it looks through the first 3 games that he ain't bull ********.

You have an enormous crush on Jantz. Jantz is looking really good so far, and absolutely could (and I would say likely will) go down as an all time great QB at ISU, but you look like an idiot when you praise him for things you harped on other players for.

In terms of 20 and 30 yard pass plays, ISU is just over halfway to last years totals.
ISU didn't have a pass play or 40 yards or more last year. Already have 4 so far, and one of those went for 50+.

Reynolds, and Lenz are very close to last years yardage totals as well.

I think the biggest difference is the offensive flow and play calling. We aren't constantly stopping and looking over to the sidelines. Boy Genius has improved in that area.

I'm on board with this line of thinking. If ISU turns the ball over 3 times in recent years, they don't come close to winning that game. The defense and WRs are playing at a new level and its making the difference.

As much as the turnovers in the redzone have sucked and kept ISU off the board, the defense has done a great job of not letting those missed opportunities turn into many points for the opposition. I don't want to say the turnovers have not hurt ISU, but the offense just goes right back down there.

Last year ISU could not move the ball well, but was a machine in the redzone. Total role reversal this year. ISU's defense has relied on turnovers to keep points off the board for 2 years...and now they cant get a T.O. but are harder to score on?

Its been a wacky season.

I think that may also have to do with the coaching staff being more confident in out defense. In the past 2 years, our D has had to play a lot and it was in ISUs best iterest to slow the game down. This year, our D is better and can get off the field faster than the last two years so we can press our advantage and try to tire our the other team. Just my opinion and that could be totally false, but I think its at least a possibility that the staff has considered it.

I gave Tiller plenty of chances to prove to me he could be our future QB. He did not do well in the department. Jantz proved to me in his first game vs UNI that he is going to be one hell of a D1 QB. If a QB in his first D1 game can take his team and put them on his shoulders and win that game for them, you more than likely have a star in the making. I have been giddy about Jantz since I found out we were recruiting him.

As stated before: get rid of the turnovers and get rid of the flags.

No telling what they could do if we clean that up.
Hopefully we find out on Saturday.

This week: +1 TO, 50 yds in penalty yardage(+-), at least 66% on FGs => we win.
