Back to the OP's question, it seems to me like it's a "safe" return. There will be times where our punt return unit will go all out for a block, and other times where they'll go all out for a return and only send one or two guys for the block. In the "safe" look it's more of, send some guys back to help the returner, and a few into the backfield but they wait until they know for sure that the ball will be kicked to keep the punting team honest. If we rush for a block or drop for a super return everytime, it opens us up to having a fake run against us. I've noticed more teams this year and last running safe looks against us, because of the successful fake punts we had in '09 and '10.
I can't remember was it the guy who blocked the punt that ran into him, or someone else? doesn't really matter, but I was just curious.

I didn't think you were right on this one, 78, so I felt compelled to watch it again last night (thanks for that you *******!)
#7 came in from the left, got a piece of the ball and nailed Kirby, spinning him to his right.
So yes, the player with the block blew up Kirby.

"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr
Does anyone know for sure what the rule is on that? Can only the person who blocks the kick hit the punter? I know it doesn't matter and the game was decided anyway, but I'd just like to know for future reference.
Also, another rules question, is there still a running into the punter penalty? I seem to remember they got rid of it and only had the 15 yarder. Kind of like how they got rid of the "incidental" face mask penalty. I could be wrong about that though.
Only the person that blocks the kick can hit the punter, if anyone else hits him too it's a penalty, or it should be atleast.
I would like to know exactly what happened to cause the blocked punt. Normally the three guys in front of the punter are enough to protect him. On that punt in looked like a team photo back there. Did the 7 guys up front just release the TX guys to cover the kick or what? Generally the blocking to protect the punter for ISU has been very good.

Snap was off to the side slightly I think, so he side stepped to get it, then stepped back to kick it. Just took way to long to get the punt off. Also Texas sent pretty much everybody.
