What is the future at OL for ISU?

I know there are a lot of young guys playing, but most are not playing very well. Baylor was eating the OL alive last night on pass plays and that is with two potential NFL guys out of 5. I remember how bad the line play was against UNI with KO hurt and Hicks suspended.

Line play was about the least of our problems last night, especially in the passing game. Jantz had plenty of time.

OL is a position that's developed over time. One of the first things the coaches noticed when they got here is that we didn't have the right kind of offensive linemen for the offense we want to run. What we want is more like what Okie State has: slimmer, quicker, more athletic.

In CPR's first full class, he signed five high school OL. Those guys are just redshirt freshmen right now. Rhoads has raved about them, but again, OL take a couple years to develop. Unfortunately, it's going to take a couple years for this offense to reach it's full potential. Similar to what Pinkel had to do at Missouri and Mangino at Kansas.

Normally I agree with you, but this time I agree with the OP. Line seemed to be getting beat from the outside more than in the other games. That has been why Steele could roll outside when other teams beat the center and/or guard. Steele did hold the ball too long on a couple, but more often there were guys coming in on him early.

I think the line was as good as it could be with the injuries we have, but I'm hoping for some improvement from some of the younger guys. If nothing else, it is an opportunity to prepare some guys for next year, as the line loses a lot to graduation.

I think the sacks were more a combination of Jantz trying to make something happen and holding onto the ball too long and good coverage by Baylor.

We're going to have five guys with Big 12 experience next year if you count Bykowski and Lichtenberg. We'll also have Dika back from injury. I don't think the UNI game was really that representative of our back-up lineman -- Bykowski played better than Farniok and Tuftee did, and those guys are playing alright now. I think our interior lineman had practiced too much against our BEEF in the middle and got owned by the small, quick, penetrators that UNI had.

There is no one on this team that is getting "schooled" like what is being experienced by Tom Farniok. (Second place would be Steele Jantz.) Stepping in as a center, as a red-shirt freshman, frankly amazes me. I have watched him get pushed back onto his a**, and get up so quickly that he is able to block the guy that popped him. As a long time fan of college football, experience tells me that he is going to be one of the best centers to put on an Iowa State jersey. Dika will be very good. Lichtenburg has some of the best footwork I have ever seen on a guy his size. Bykowski has more than held his own when he has been on the field. And everything that I have heard from practice, leads me to conclude that Gannon is going to develop into a pretty dominant lineman. I look forward to seeing what takes place, over the next several years, with our offensive line. I am not simply a kool-aid drinker. I have had several family members play college football (OL). OUr foundation is being set for a really good offensive line. IMO.

I disagree. Pass protection was pretty bad most of the night and has been similarly poor many times this year. Almost every time a team sends more than four at us and we happen to be passing, the line collapses immediately.

coach is excited about the young guys, this is a positive for the clones going forward, we need more playmakers at wr and more play making at lb in addition to Knott lbs other than Knott got owned vs Baylor hangs has made some great plays in his short career but his turnovers and inconsistency will cost more games than win until he gets a lot better we are close to being pretty good, just a few playmakers away imo

For the most part I think this OL does a much better job of run blocking as opposed to pass protection. I know OL's tend to like to run block more then pass block so maybe this is something that needs to develop a bit more.

If everyone was healthy I think this could be a top 3 OL in the league, I do not think that will happen this year.

Should ISU be dialing up some more running plays until everyone gels more? I REALLY like the burst White has.

I agree with him. During the Texas game it looked like he (jantz) was having wtf moments all the time. The blitzing and coverages the past two games have slowed the progression of reads down for him. Thinking too much, not having the same pocket presence. Most long run plays have come off osemele's hind end. He can maul people in the run block plays. I think Horne has the shortest arms of any receiver we have had in a while. Take a hit.
