Probably. The conference is also better than it was when Chizik was here. It's still a big concern. Rhoads said it himself today.
Even though we were 6th we only won 2 games that year. Say what you want about the rush defense under Rhoads and Chizik but the bottom line is we've won 12 games the past two years compared to Chizik's 5.
We had pretty good special teams and moved the ball well on offense under chizik. Pretty easy schedule as well, but none of that led to any wins so the point is moot.
Recently read about this comment from a Texas sports-reporter. "The next negative article that I read about Iowa State's Head Coach Paul Rhoads.......will be the first".
We went from 11th (153.8) in the B12 in rush defense to 6th (136.1) in Chizik's first year. Is that due to Chizik? Who knows. He and his coaches had something to do with it.
Our rush defense totals have gotten worse under Rhoads in each of his three years. 174.8 2009/186.3 2010/202.8 2011.
There are other measurables for defensive linemen than rush defense, obviously. But it is a meaningful indicator. I'm not ragging on Rhoads. He'll get it done.
The improvement from 2006 to 2007 was due to Tuba Rubin really turning into a great player his senior year. The reason Rhoads' numbers dipped from 2009 to 2010 is because we played a much tougher schedule. The teams we've played this year are primarily running teams with the exception of Baylor, but we sold out to limit their passing game and got gashed on the ground as a result.

If you have a ****** defense you won't win in the big 12...offenses are too explosive and if you can't slow them down you might as well forfeit IE Kansas this year and Iowa State under Chizik
Wally was the best addition by far of the CPR era...defense has literally won lots of big games like @Nebraska and UNI(a loss here would have turned the season to a nightmare) this year..also had a good part in the win @Texas last year giving up 6 points in almost 3 quarters helping relieve pressure from the offense.
Come here to chew bubble gum and kick ***, have I. And all out of bubble gum, I am.
