Rhoads' comments on 810 WHB in KC just now
- First three wins to open season were most exciting three game stretch in his coaching career
- Iowa game is huge for fans' bragging rights; important for entire state and both schools
- Thinks this year is not a rebuilding year but rather a building year
- Realignment increased difficulty in schedule
- Supposed to play 1-5 Colorado at home this year; replaced with OSU
- Supposed to play 2-3 Utah; replaced with A&M
- With coaching change, can establish culture quickly; but takes at least five years to get stamp on program
- QB clearly most important position on football team
- Really likes Jantz's skills, now in development
- Had list of JUCO QB recruits to pursue. Noticed Jantz after MU game. Made decision they needed a JUCO QB after MU game last year.
- Jantz's running makes him the most dangerous
- Running QB creates another gap for defense to worry about
- Franklin will create problems for our defense
- Will need to run the ball on MU to win
- Ran the ball well against Baylor but did not stop run; gave up 400 yards
- Conference talk has had minimal effect on recruiting
- Recruits trust the coaching staff rather than news reports regarding conference
- Thinks TCU is a great addition
- TCU addition helps recruiting in Texas; allows his Texas players to go home for another game.
- No strong preference for numbers of schools in B12, but likes 10 teams because every team plays each other. Gives true champion.
- After QB, defensive lineman most important position
- OJ Simpson went to Jantz's JUCO
- Wanted Auburn to win national championship given his relationship with players on that team

I was thinking the same thing.

He stressed the importance of defensive linemen. It's kind of a mystery to me why he and his staff haven't had better production out of that group (both in recruiting and on the field).

It's not a mystery. Developing a d-line with depth and consistency takes time. Not 2 years.

Production has been there from the DT's. Not the DE's though. Recruiting appears to be getting better with the DE's

You need to develop defensive linemen from other positions in order to get a speedy line.. Look at Baylor, took a big high school wide receiver and turned him into a defensive end that ran a 95 yard fumble back for a touchdown.

We went from 11th (153.8) in the B12 in rush defense to 6th (136.1) in Chizik's first year. Is that due to Chizik? Who knows. He and his coaches had something to do with it.
Our rush defense totals have gotten worse under Rhoads in each of his three years. 174.8 2009/186.3 2010/202.8 2011.
There are other measurables for defensive linemen than rush defense, obviously. But it is a meaningful indicator. I'm not ragging on Rhoads. He'll get it done.

Don't you think that is somewhat due to schedule difficulty? It's not like Burnham forgot how to coach a defense

What were we ranked in pass defense under chizik/Wayne bolt? I feel like we would be #120.

Probably. The conference is also better than it was when Chizik was here. It's still a big concern. Rhoads said it himself today.

You've got to love this guy. He has such knowledge and insight, plus he actually says something substantive during the interview. There was more information and analysis above than Chizik gave in his entire career of interviews. There are so many ways to compare the two, but this one really makes a difference for me. Chizik acted like every injury was a world-class secret. Rhoads builds support within his team and from the fans by engaging us in the real stuff of coaching the team.

Who had to run on us when our pass defense was such a disgrace?
