    Zone read vs Spread attack?

Could someone please explain to me the key differences and how ISU fairs with either of this approaches as a team vs 1) Kansas, 2) OSU, 3) OU, and 4) KSU.

Re: Zone read vs Spread attack?

I personally like the zone read. The spread is something nice but ISU does not have the right personal at this moment. What happened was nice with Barnett. He read the defense and reacted. That in my opinion was a smart thing to do.
In all honesty, maybe we should have done that all year long. Did you notice how when Jantz got into the game they gave him no "spread" read options to look at. It was all hand the ball off or zone read?
Keep it simple and all is good. We have 2 qb's who have a total of 8 starts between them. KEEP IT SIMPLE! Work on the simple **** first then get fancy! That'll help any program.

I think zone read can win us two more games this season. Kansas and Kansas State.

I agree that we don't have good personnel to play spread attack at this time. I wish we realized this before and put Barnett throughout the last four games :(

Re: Zone read vs Spread attack?

I don't think I've ever seen us run anything but a spread option variant of the spread offense, so I'm not sure what you're asking.

What does "spread attack" mean to you?

Re: Zone read vs Spread attack?

The "zone read" is just a running play out of the "spread" offense. For whatever reason, I assume familiarity, Barnet just runs the play better than Jantz

Re: Zone read vs Spread attack?

You can run a zone read out of a number of formations or alignments, not just the spread. Remember, "the spread" is a formation - not an offense. You can run just about any offensive concept out of any formation. The zone read is our base play, and the rest of the offense hums when the zone read (or the threat of the zone read) is working. When we can't get it going, everything else will shut down.
"No matter how many hours you study opponent films, there's only going to be eleven players on the other side of the line of scrimmage." - Sid Gillman

It's a simple game in which strategic beauty comes not from being surprised by some new clever trick, but from the sublime, routine brilliance of a master in his element.

Tom Herman has always ran the zone read. It is a big part of any spread offense. What the hell is this thread about?

Re: Zone read vs Spread attack?

The zone read is great and it should continue to be the staple of this offense, which is still by all measures a spread offense. The idea is still to stretch the defense and use space and speed to the offense's advantage, it's just that our running backs and mobile QB have proven a more effective at accomplishing that goal and scoring points.
