Mike Gundy is a smart guy and, better yet, a great coach. He knows that every game counts on the road to a national championship, and he's not about to let one slip by his team, whether he's playing Iowa State, Oklahoma, or Phoenix University.
The good news is that the best way to beat Oklahoma State was the same way we beat Texas Tech: keep their offense off the field, get ahead so they don't have time to run the ball, play tight coverage, and tackle the ball carrier. Since we've done it before, maybe we can do it again. The bad news is that Mike Gundy has the game film from us destroying Texas Tech. There's also the issue that Oklahoma State has better players at every offensive position than Texas Tech has.
Another question mark heading into this game is turnovers. While Iowa State has been improving in this category, Oklahoma State is leading the nation in turnovers with 29 because it is a big focus of their defensive game plans. I have no doubt that our offense can put up a few points on this defense if it can keep control of the ball, but it seems like that's a big if at this point.
The Cyclones need to build on their momentum and confidence with a win this weekend first, though. Put up some big rushing numbers against Kansas, then I'll be undeniably pumped for the OSU game. Throw in a bunch of intangibles I posted in another thread and this game will be closer than anybody will be willing to predict.
I would say that both teams can ill affford to overlook the other this weekend.
If we would beat Okie State, it would probably be the biggest upset in ISU history
I'm different from everyone else, I don't think OSU is this great team thats unbeatable. Sure they are damn good, but I would say they are only a top 10 team. ISU can stay with a top ten team if they come to play. Remember Nebraska last year.
OSU only beat A&M by 1 point. A&M is a solid team, but OSU would have lost if Sherman would have ran the ball in the second half. They also struggled with Texas and Mizzou. A top 3 team wouldn't have struggled with those schools. I think OU is better than OSU and we saw what could happen if they don't come to play. I think we'll learn a lot about OSU after this week when they take on Kstate. I think we are very similar to KSU, and I would not be surprised to see OSU lose.
If we win, i will go streaking on Lincoln Way. and then try to wake myself up from the dream.
Hey folks - Im a professor here at OSU and born and raised in Iowa. I proudly sport my clone colors here in stillwater and support both teams (My first encounter with Weeden, I was wearing some clone gear). People here are very high on Iowa State (as in they like us) and multiple people comment on how they feel Rhodes is the best coach in the Big 12. A person that supposedly has spoken with the coaching staff (works with the local radio) stated that Gundy and crew have this game circled as a trap game and really respect coach rhodes. So my money is on that they do not look over Iowa State. Hope it is a well played game but damn we have some horses here. Anyway, will be at Finnegans in Stillwater rooting on the Clones this weekend, here's to two in a row!
I think we're overlooking WVU in 2012.
