Sorry HiltonMagic, but the Des Moines register used to be the gold standard. When it wasn't owned by Gannett

Except the fact that we beat a TOP 20 team! on the ******* road you dumb *** guaranteed if the ******* Hawks did that, the whole story would have been on the front page. so spare us your BS

No matter what Stormin wants to believe is true, the Rag routinely adjusts its deadlines when EIU plays late games. Hard to believe anyone would try to defend that POS paper.

NOT on Sunday's paper which requires a Saturday night deadline earlier than weekdays.

The Sunday Register is delivered here to the Carriers between Midnight and 1 am. Explain to me how the Sunday Register can have coverage for an ISU game at Lubbock, Texas included in the Sunday paper that must be transported 2 1/2 hours north by Midnight to 1 am. It is impossible. And the outcome at Texas Tech was totally unpredictable. Plus it wasn't a situation where ISU was playing a pivotal game in deciding our potential conference championship.

Yes. The Rag has a definite Hawkeye slant. But you would be hard pressed to find the Sunday Register to have stories on Saturday night games that end after 9 pm. It is logistically impossible given the printing times and delivery of the paper.

Clones85, I suggest you go to the register and request a tour of both the paper and the production (state of the art) facility. You obviously havent a clue.

Last I knew they didnt have people working in that dept on sundays so I doubt you did. He wrote about Nebraska because their are fans of Nebraska in the state. The paper doesnt just care about what you care about.

Well, if you wanted to sell a lot of papers, would you put one subject on the front or multiple. They managed to get the isu fan interested w/ the pic and then have other stories on the front to go along with it to capture more readers. derrrrr

Exactly, to increase readership, good work.

Well as we all know the Ceader Rapids Gazette has over 500,000 copies delivered on Sunday like the DMR. Wait no they dont. They have prob around 25,000 copies if that. Now I realize you come from a journalism background so I dont need to go into detail on how a newspaper, especially one as large as the sunday paper is laid out because im sure you understand that this is done on around Monday or Tuesday of the week. Its called pagenation (but you already knew that). Its a giant puzzle that takes dozens of people to put together. Sooooo... Now that the paper is laid out they dont know the outcome of the game so they reserve space for say a picture for example win/lose. W/ the story to come in later pages. I dont know how they did things back in high school when you delivered papers, but thats how it works now. Lots of times they will print the entire paper and then add in special pages w/ sports or something towards the back as the news comes in and they stick them in after the majority of the paper is printed however i dont know if this is how the dmr does it.

I have never heard anyone say anything good about a newspaper and ive been involved w/ around 154 of them. Everyone thinks their local paper sucks.

Thats like saying car dealerships are going out of business. Some are, small cities w/ 2 papers or weak papers. The DMR is one of the strongest papers in the country and to quote the New York Times "The Des Moines Register is the Gold Standard" ect.

See above, more stories on the front get more readers, think logically about something and usually you can find the answer as to why things are the way they are

Exactly and most newspapers would like you to do more of that. Why (you didnt ask) you ask? Because papers dont make money via subscriptions sold or by people buying the paper at a gas station, they make it from advertising. Not only does it cost money to print a paper, it is hard to prove to a potential advertiser how many and who is reading the paper. However, it is verrry easy to target different age groups or demographics online and prove exactly how many looked at their ad, clicked on their ad ect.
Hint to the RAG: Obviously your pro Nebraska and Iowa sports focus is going to cause you problems when you have another in state BCS Big XII school 35 miles north of Des Moines; and from the "what it's worth department" . . .a radical Liberal point of view does not sell newspapers in the conservative Midwest. Think about it.

    1. No, they were just playing a top 20 team on the Road, who the previous week took OU out of National Title aspirations. Hell no, god forbid that means anything. When ESPN gives you credit, why the hell would the god damn local media give Iowa State credit.
    2. Good, now we finally get a Staff member to admit this.

The Lack of Coverage in the Sunday Register had to do with the time of the game played at Lubbock, Texas and the deadlines for getting the Sunday Register to print.

You address none of those issues with your rant. Big difference between a LIVE TV broadcast, web coverage, and print media. But go on with your rant.

Go back and look at the coverage ISU got last year for defeating Texas @ Texas.

    Stormin and Bringmagicback,

I've asked this twice and haven't gotten an answer..........

What is the difference between when we played Baylor and Texas Tech? Both road games. Both kicked off at the same time. Baylor was on the front page and Tech wasnt. So I ask, again, what was the difference?

MY Sunday Register from October 9, 2011 had NO picture and NO mention of the Baylor game at all. So WTF are you talking about?

I just dug it out and looked at it.

Pretty sure the game was over before 9, but i could be wrong.

Kick off time was at like noon, apples to oranges, so my next question is, how much coverage did the god blessed hawks get that day?

The interweb publishes information on games in real time, for free.

The "newspaper" in is traditional form is dying or nearly dead, and I for one couldn't be happier.

I can open my iPad and drink my coffee in the morning a hell of a lot easier than dicking with a big unruly newspaper. Better yet I can get 10 different takes on the same story at my finger tips, instead of one local reporter's coverage or lack there of.

Arguing about newspapers is like debating about what format sounds better, the 8-Track or the Cassette.

Not according to hiltonmagic, Des Moines register is the "gold standard".

I dug out my October 9, 2011 Sunday Register. NO Mention of the Baylor vs. ISU game. Had the same start time as Texas Tech vs. ISU game.

The lack of coverage of the TTU vs. ISU had more to do with the time of the kickoff and the end of the game combined with the press deadline for Saturday evening for the SUNDAY Register.

IMO, the Rag would have gladly put the TTU vs. ISU game off the front page to downplay the dismal play of the Hawks vs. Gophers if they had a choice. Pathetic showing by the Hawks.
