Re: Kansas' defense
if our O line controls the line of scrimmage like they did vs tech than we will run all over kansas... i really worry if we end up having to do a lot of passing... i think barnett has proven serious inaccuracy in trying throw the ball downfield... he runs the zone read really well, so if we can control by running we should take this game easily...

. . . Just wanted to compliment your math. Accuracy is a good change of pace for a message board. May my postings be polite and not misunderstood. (And hopefully funny on occasion.) -

Other than 50+ yards, Guyer is definitely the kicker. 50+ yards is likely still to be Mahoney (but only in low-risk situations like end-of-half or end-of-game). In a tight game, I think we're much more likely to go for it or punt and play for field position if the field goal attempt is 50+ yards.

Comparing their FG stats probably isn't fair to Mahoney. I don't know exactly his yardages but he get's the long FGs and Guyer has gotten the chip shots. Neither have been good. I still don't know how you miss extra points when you practice them every day though. That is probably the most inexcusable play in football.
I'm an idiot. The stats show Mahoney got one under 50 and missed it.

The stats show Mahoney got one of the shorter ones and missed it. The rest are longer than Guyer's. That may be, but I don't think this difinitively proves it. Mahoney's shorter miss was still over 40. However, Mahoney still missed two PAT's. So maybe you are right... "There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr -

Re: Kansas' defense
IMO this kansas defense is really really bad. However, they have played better offenses then has ISU with OSU and Okie still on the dockett, our defense statistics could suffer a bit of a fall during that time too.
However, I believe a few things came out of the Tech game....
This team has confidence something that KU has given up on i'm sure of it. Gill will try to motivate but really what are they playing for - spoiler...good luck!
Our offense seemed to have fresh air blown into it...the execution was superior to any game i've seen in 3 years. I mean seriously 50% on 3rd down, thats awesome. Those are daggers to a defense....
Secondly, accuracy...both in running game and passing game. In the running game the accuracy of the blocks allowed the running backs to pick which cut back lane they wanted. I foresee a lot more of the same this week. Passing - although we never really tried the over the top deep pass, we tried enough of the 15-20 yards throws the defense stayed honest even while we were racking up 350 yards of rushing.
Lastly - Sustaining drives. It seemed with the fresh breathe of energy this offense had, the execution and the decision making, the sustaining of our drives was a killer. There is nothing more exhausting to a defense then long sustained drives. ISU is holding opposing offenses to 39% on 3rd down conversion whereas KU is allowing a staggering 55%...thats how you lose football games....it would appear that down and distance are really not important if you convert on 55% of your 3rd downs - your gonna win a lot of games!
I will tell you right now without hesitation - we convert on 50% of our 3rd downs as a running team, we will dominate the time of possession and win football games!!!!
Anxious to see which team shows up for both teams this weekend. I hope, that the luster of Mr. Barnett has not yet worn off and he lights up KUs dfense...
