The keys to upsetting OSU:
1. Temperature below 30 degrees.
2. Wide speed above 30mph.
3. Horizontal precipitation.

Just thought it worth mentioning that we currently have the same record as Florida...for what that's worth.

Re: 5-4 with 3 games to go.....
I think we've got a shot guys. OSU and KSU had ZERO defense, and OU lost another receiver to a torn Achiles Tendon. We just need one.

Re: 5-4 with 3 games to go.....
I love the Cyclones and I am not complacent in any way, but if we don't win any of the next three games, I am not going to be disappointed with this season. I just watched KSU and OSU and these are both top 10 teams in my opinion. OSU is a legitimate bid for the national championship game. I think it is going to be a long shot to upset either one of them.
With the inconsistency, I have to say OU might be a better shot. They lost to Tech, Broyles is out, and can play really poorly at times. I don't want to say our opportunity is gone because I love how we can play sometimes. However, the only way to beat any of our next three is to outscore them and I just think that is going to be tough. Not because we are awful, but because they are that good. You want to go bowling, give me Texas, Mizzou, or Baylor back with the way our offense has been playing recently. I think any one of those games was our 6th win.

It looks difficult to win any of the next 3 games, so 5 wins seems realistic. But being 5-4 then finishing 5-7 doesn't feel satisfactory.
I predicted a 5-7 season this year, so I didn't have extreme expectations. Not as if I saw 9-3 and have suffered a letdown.
I suppose it's normal to see 5-7 or 6-6 as "OK" at this point, considering those four (mostly) lopsided losses. Two weeks ago, having a shot at a bowl seemed like a remote possibility. Now, it's one win away, and we should be content because it could have been a 3-9 season?
I understand reality, but I don't understand "settling."
I did a quick run of the remaining Big 12 schedules. Believe it or not, ISU could still finish in the top 3 in the conference. This year. (Might even be mathematically possible to tie for second, but I tallied it quickly, so I might have erred).
Yes, the chances of this happening are miniscule. Not only does it require winning out (unlikely), but it involves several other unlikely scenarios.
Do I expect anything that mythical? No. Does this look like a team that could played consistently well enough to do it? Nah.
But 8-4 regular season is still there for the taking, yet 5-7 is OK?
As for "next year (5-7) won't be satisfactory" — I see the logic. There could be a lot of positives from this season even if ISU finishes 5-7, but I don't want to have the same discussion next season. Seems like I heard the same thing a lot after last season. The problem though is can you really get upset when this team loses the next 3 games? They are all going to be to teams that are outstanding and have more talent. I still think that K-State beats Texas and A&M and will be 9-2 when we play them on the road. Then you got a 1 loss Oklahoma team on the road that has lost once in the last 5 years at home, and of course we play an undefeated team in two weeks at home that could very well end up in the national title this year. I just want our effort these next 3 weeks to be as high as possible and play as competitively as possible so they have something to build on. Expecting them to win one of the next 3 is pretty unreasonable. (Also not exactly all directed at your post)

Beating OSU is going to be one heck of a challenge, but we our do for a huge upset.....and if we did it would be the biggest in school history.

I'm still hoping for another signature Paul Rhoads win yet this season.

I would assess the season as a whole.
Having a shot at a bowl but losing to 3 good teams (and they're looking like all are extremely solid at this point*) -- no reason to hang our heads. If those games are blowout losses, that's another story. Or, conversely, if any of them were close enough to win, that might bug me as a lost opportunity.
I'm with you as far as effort and being competitive. At least that provides a shot at winning.
*Tech over OU is looking like at least a partial fluke
