It has to be something to do with a defunct rule or some sort of off-the-field situation (what that would be, I have no clue)

Then you kept possesion after a safety, so you ran 3 plays and on 4th down you ran back to your end zone and gave a gift safety and you get the ball on the 20. ISU did this 3 times to win the game.
