Re: is there such a thing as a program changing win?
It isn't just this win. It is the win at Nebraska and subsequent bowl win in Tempe. It is the first ever win at Texas. It is the triple OT win against Iowa. It is the first ever win against a top two team and second bowl eligibility in 3 years.

There are career changing wins for program changing coaches.

Re: is there such a thing as a program changing win?
Shaggybevo had a nice point: 30-7 domination after falling down by 17.
When you can say that you just beat down a team playing for a national championship shot, you're changing your program.
When Rhoads talked 8 million times about changing the culture, this win just shows that it's already happened, and now we can see it play out.

I don't do signatures. Blondes, brunettes, and red heads are a different story. -

Re: is there such a thing as a program changing win?
Maybe not program changing, but it's seems we're turning the corner. It definitely has gained us some fanhood. I went to the store today wearing my ISU hat and got four high-fives and couldn't walk down an aisle without someone telling me they loved how my team plays football and the intensity of our coach. And I'm in the middle of Indiana! We need a good showing against OU, to keep it going though. I don't think we need to win, but we can't go out there and lay an egg, or else we take a big step back. We don't need all people to switch to us as their favorite team, we just need to start as the team everyone cheers for when not cheering for their favorite team. If you have kids in Texas/Florida/California saying "Go Longhorns/Gators/Trojans! And did you see that Iowa State game?!" It will really help develop recruiting and ultimately help develop the program.

Re: is there such a thing as a program changing win?
No one anywhere would have been surprised if we had lost by 50, so hell yeah, it's a program-changer.
Even if we hadn't won another game this year, there is no doubt CPR has up-graded the talent A LOT in 3 years time. We just had/have a LONG way to go in that department.

Does this give us a boost in recruiting? I still don't see any of the big prospects coming here because it. We could catch the attention of some pretty good recruits who are feeling snubbed by the big schools and may view us as a way to "get back" to those other schools. Maybe not yet but instead of 2-3 star guys we start getting 3-4. Sometimes a whole team's success can be greatly improved by just ONE guy...or even ONE play. We are building. Once we consistently get to one level we start building for the next...Soon we start pulling in 4&5 star guys. But you don't get there when you're only pulling the 2-3 star players.
Last night when we went to the second OT I told my friend..."it comes down to ONE play. We get a TO here and it's game over." No more than 30 seconds later Knott tips that pass..Benton catches it...And the crowd starts gathering to swarm the field. While that one play wasn't what won the game...had it not happened the results could have ended up much different. Even ONE player with more talent can affect a team greatly.

Re: is there such a thing as a program changing win?
First it starts with some wins that are "Firsts"
Then over the next couple seasons it will be "This is the second win in 3 years....." along with scratching one or two monkeys off our backs still.
Then, you start to get wins like that and no one is shocked.
Then eventually (hopefully) you are a program that teams will brag about beating occasionally.

cinci crushes rutgers' dream season. although they did make a bcs game, are still hardly a dominant force (although they are having a good season so far...they are sitll in the big east).
arizona beats #2 oregon. 'zona currently sits at 2 wins
pitt defeats wv. pitt has hovered in the land of mediocrity ever since.
KU makes it to a bcs game, and wins. however, they are HORRIBLE now.
TTech has had a number of marque wins and are on a slippery slope to being the worst team in the big 12
None of these teams have gone on to become truly elite after achieving "program changing win". i guess the main factor in all of these teams though is probably coaching turnover. this simply proves we need to keep cpr. The common denominator in all those scenarios you lay out is, none of them have the same head coach as they did that day. Some have made multiple head coaching moves since then. If we can keep Rhoads it may very well be a program changer for us.

Re: is there such a thing as a program changing win?
1 huge win may not change a program. Luckily for ISU we are averaging 1 huge win every season in the CRP era. This year we, arguably, have 2 huge wins so I'd say I'm not too worried about us following in the footsteps of the teams you listed above.

. That's not the stat I would have used, although its impressive. In the last 27 minutes of regulation, we shutout the #2 offensive team in the country (17-0). The way Weeden had played the 2nd quarter and the first drive of the 3rd quarter, that is just an impossible stat.
