Re: BEST call of the game!!!
Did anyone else notice that that was the only kickoff that Jeremy Reeves participated in?
I can guarantee that it was a set play that Watson throw that block to ensure that Reeves could recover.

Looking at the way the ball is spinning, I would expect it to be spinning the opposite direction if the ball had hit the ground first. I think it may be the case that #2 SHOULD have gotten called for interference.
I agree. I was talking more about the strategy of an "expected" vs "surprise" on-side kick, not the rules themselves.
You could be right about interference, though. Technically, he could possibly have been called. Anyone have more insight on this (assuming the ball didn't hit the ground)?

That call by the refs at Baylor is still unbelievable!

Re: BEST call of the game!!!
If the ball does not touch the ground first, the kicking team cannot go make contact with someone going after the ball until it hits the ground.
I know that in ISU's previous onside kicks, they have all been bounced high off the ground so I have no reason to think this one was schemed any differently.
Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating. -

I'm biased as hell...but the game changer was the onside kick and its not even close. Originally Posted by IcSyU Didn't he drill it into the ground like kickers are taught to do? Maybe something like that never gets called, I don't know, or maybe it did hit the ground, but to me I don't see it. It doesnt hit the ground. This is the 3rd time theyve run this kick I believe (Texas, Baylor and OSU). The team calls it a "Pass-Kick", because it doesnt hit the ground and because it looks like a pass to the defender. IMO the Texas one was the best kicked one that Grant has done. He told me he didnt feel like he hit it well enough Friday and was afraid it wasnt going to go the full 10...but of course it did.
Its an incredibly risky play because since it doesnt hit the ground, the receiving team can call for a fair catch and the kicking team cant go for it. HOWEVER, this kick seems to be a lot more effective for the following reasons:
1. Grant's approach is that of a normal kick. With a bouncing onside, the kicker is kicking the top of the ball to get that high bounce. The Pass-kick looks like a normal kick up until the last step. This forces the receiving team to retreat.
2. Also, the receiving team doesnt have enough time do determine whether or not the ball actually hit the ground giving the kickoff team more time to block and set up the recovery.
3. The ball is kicked directly to the outside man on the kick off team who stands exactly at the 10.5 yardline (they go past 10 so they recover with indisputable video evidence). Watch every time we have successfully converted this (yes I'm counting Baylor), it has been exact and down to a science. Grant said that they have run this play every day in practice for the past 2 years.
4. Its not a conventional onside where the kickoff team lines up unbalanced. Everything looks routine and normal, again making it more difficult for the receiving team.
I'm not saying that no other team has ever run this play, but I certainly have never seen it run. If it has been and I didnt know it, I've never seen it run this smoothly, this often, and with this high of a success rate.
So there you go...

The Baylor one is a little different because there isn't a block made until after we catch the ball. The OSU player sniffed it out pretty damn well, but was blocked so well he didn't have a chance to get to the ball.

Re: BEST call of the game!!!
According to the all-powerful wikipedia, it is correct (and I did not know this) that kicking the ball into the ground eliminates a fair catch and KCI, but is not required. Onside kick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia May my postings be polite and not misunderstood. (And hopefully funny on occasion.) -
Re: BEST call of the game!!!
So if it was a "pass kick", did the refs miss a KCI call? Was it a legal block, and if so, why?

So there you go... That is some intense truth. There is no kicker in the universe who can kick an oblong football that accurately off of a bounce on the ground. That would be absurd.

In practice I would always have that play in the back of my head that the offense would do it, but then they wouldn't and then bam when I least expected it there it was and I was stuck trying to chase E Haywood down the sideline.
Also, side note that wheel route was the same play UNI did against us late in the 4th qtr this year that went for an 80 yard TD.
