WOW is all I can say after beating Oklahoma State on Friday. What an awesome game, and an incredible accomplishment for Iowa State University.
A HUGE benefit of this win that I've already seen firsthand is national recognition from fans elsewhere. Many top schools were rooting for us to take out OSU to help their own program, but none of them realistically thought we had a chance in the game, like most of us. Since we were able to pull it off, fans from around the nation have something positive to relate ISU to, instead of just being the normal Big 12 doormat.
Who? Iowa State? They are in the Big 12? Aren't they the Hawkeyes? Questions like will become less common if we continue our trend of huge upsets.
I live in Texas. Saturday I went out to eat with a couple of friends and had several people notice my ISU hat and congratulate me on the win. Last night I was at a sports bar and had an Arkansas fan buy me a shot because I was an ISU fan.
We are witnessing the infancy of something special at Iowa State. I love it.
Yeah, I went out and got a pizza Saturday night and a couple of people stopped me to talk about the game. In Iowa, but still. Had a Nebraska fan I work with call it the best game he has seen this year.
I think next year will be a big year in this sense for the Cyclones. If they can win 8 games next year and compete in the B12 again, people will remember this game. If they don't play well next year this game could be forgotten by most people.
Of course, unless Iowa or ISU compete for BCS bowls on a regular basis, most won't recognize either team outside of the midwest.
I had been wearing ISU-gear all late last week and then again back here Saturday evening and Sunday in Texas. It was amazing the number of people who stopped to comment. Even a 14 year old kid across the store in Costco Saturday night with his mom yelled "go Cyclones!". It is pretty cool.
I think the thing that has struck me more than anything else is that I've found that ISU isn't a polarizing school in any way. This game seems to have brought out some recognition across all fanbases, including Okie State fans, where they're congratulating us and genuinely mean it! After all of the realignment BS, its nice to get some love.
I got a comment on my sweatshirt in a Whole Foods in Cambridge, Mass. I really think this is notable since he was probably the only person in the store who had ever watched a football game in their life....especially one that didn't have Tom Brady in it.
