The thread below is the first one in which Rhoads was identified as our new coach. Pretty funny reading, given recent events: http://www.cyclonefanatic.com/forum/...ch-thread.html (12/20 OFFICIAL HC SEARCH THREAD)
Not to pick on any good CF poster in particular, but hindsight is sometimes fun, especially if things turn out better than originally expected. Sorry, Cyclonestate78. but I have to do this: http://www.cyclonefanatic.com/forum/...tml#post792785 (12/20 OFFICIAL HC SEARCH THREAD) If this is true I am totally disappointed. I can't believe we are doing this again with a guy who has no head coaching experience. Hearing this news just made my heart sink. I supported Pollard and thought he would do what was best for ISU... sounds like he just took the easy road and most likely the wrong one. BOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! This hire is going to be a disaster. Mark my words.
I suspect that a few CF-ers would like to make some retractions.

T Boone started throwing money at OSU when they still sucked. We will have to win some more to get the donor support we will need. Gotta think it will only get easier to gain that support.

Heck, I'd take the over if you just limited to schools in Iowa. If you had said BCS coaches in the last 30 years I might agree. Your typical division III school just doesn't have the pressure to win and many of those coaches aren't just looking for a bigger paycheck.
I won't claim to know what drives CPR and what his ultimate goal is, but I would be surprised if he leaves while his dad is still alive, and downright shocked if he left just a few months after his mother died. I think Ohio State could offer him $5 million a year and he wouldn't leave this year.

Thanks for posting the thread. It's very interesting to see the reactions with the benefit of hindsight. I also enjoyed reading the original press release from his hire.

I think Ohio State could offer him $5 million a year and he wouldn't leave this year. A) I didn't realize I needed to qualify it was Division 1A only. We don't spend much time on here talking about Division III football...
B) I can think of one coach who retired from Iowa by his own accord and didn't coach somewhere else afterwards (Fry). I can't think of any from ISU but maybe some ISU historians can help me out with that one.
Also, I never said he'd leave this year. He never had a shot at the OSU job anyway (it is, and was going to be Meyer from day 1).

Both cases you make $16M, but one you leave on your terms, the other you don't. But, the one you make the same for half the time...
This is purely a question of what you would do. I would much rather do what I love at the place I love for as long as I want and step away respected vs. the Earl Bruce, John Cooper, Frank Solich, Rich Rodriguez, etc.
***Assumption is that one could be "successful" long enough at a smaller school, but not succeed at the big stage job, or even be successful but hate the pressure that goes with it. And he actually makes more net at 2 mil /yr @ 8 yrs if the tax rate is higher @ 4 mil than 2 mil. Of course that's over 50 times what I would gross in a good year so I can't be sure if theres a rate difference at that income level.

Isn't this guy a brilliant coach? Auburn fans didn't want him let go. We didn't. Pittsburgh didn't. I assume the issue with him is that he hasn't been a name on HC lists much? He is from Ankeny, and an amazing DC coach. -

Re: Rhoads to Ohio State?
I think we're pushing the panic button too early. All the pundits and commentators are saying that the tOSU job is Urban Meyer's; it's just that UM is delaying trying to assemble a staff while letting the season play out. Paul Rhoads is not going to Columbus, OH.

Re: Rhoads to Ohio State?
He's not going to OSU. He's gonna wait till that Auburn job opens up again.
And IMO, that will happen sooner than later. Walking on water is easy. Just do it in December when it's frozen. -

And IMO, that will happen sooner than later. What will happen sooner than later? Auburn job opening up? I think Chizik will be there for over a decade unless the scandal surrounding Cam Newton blows up the whole FB program. It doesn't look like that's going to happen.
IMO, the Penn State is the job I'm concerned about "stealing" CPR. PSU needs a coach who is honest, reliable, clean and successful, and CPR meets all those qualifications. I look for PSU to make an offer to CPR, but I think he will turn them down for a number of reasons -- mostly because the criminal investigation into the PSU FB program is not finished, and more charges and sanctions probably will be forthcoming, and I'm sure CPR does not want to be in the middle of that mess.
