That missed fake extra-point vs. Nebraska last year looms larger by the hour!
Can you imagine ANY coach taking a modest-history team into 3 straight bowls in his first 3 years like CPR? Darn that missed fake xp! How big is it now? Three bowls with Chizik's players of whom he couldn't do jack with in 2 makes Rhoads look like a little more than a genius. Why even now, 2 bowls in his first 3 look quite fine for the state of the program right now.
One more thing: One of the Summer preseason publications mentioned something like "If Iowa State gets a second bowl in Rhoad's third year, they will have earned it." Can you tell if it was Athlon's, Street & Smith's, Lindy's, or The Sporting News? I can't recall because I didn't buy it. All these magazines do every Summer is pick ISU to finish dead last in the Big 12. Fine. We NEVER do. Never will. We've also been underdogs in every game except Kansas. No line for UNI. That's ok too as we will probably be underdogs in our bowl no matter who it is.
I think this takes the pressure off. Your thoughts?

The missed XP still haunts me. If only....
CPR appears to be more than fine with being an underdog. He is a guy with a lot of emotion and is more than willing to call onside kicks, fake punts, etc. He is a great coach to watch and one I would love to play for.
And besides you can't justify storming the field if you are the favorite -

Everyone forgets the close wins, but for some reason, they remember the close loses.
ISU is 5-0 in CLOSE GAMES this year. Let's be thankful for what we have instead of dwelling on what could have been.
GO CYCLONES.

I find reassurance in knowing that is the only thing that kept us from being in 3 straight bowls. Better than laying an egg in year two, we were just that close and it was a ballsy call that kept us from it, not missing a field goal and such.

I am still 100% convinced it was the right call. The only thing that might have made it better was sneaking a backup QB in as holder, but for all we know that could have tipped off the Nebraska defense/special teams.
Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice? Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this. -

I look at it like this. we traded a loss for 2 wins, the overtime last year taught the coaches and Players to put a game away IMO. I would trade a loss vs Nebraska and get a win agaist Iowa and the Number 2 team in the land.
it haunts me I see it in my nightmares but u gotta walk before you run!

We still should have beaten a 5-7 Colorado team the week following the Nebraska loss to become bowl eligible.
We didn't deserve to go bowling last year.

I'm still more mad about laying down at Colorado last year

However, these two were "should have wins".
When we lost to KSU, first thing I said was that we'd want that one back to get to a bowl.
The CU game looked very winnable on paper, and ended up being a damn mess.
OP is right, bowling first three years (with brutal schedules) would be nice, but I think the best of CPR is to come... FIRE UP!

It's the play that sold me on Rhoads. The one where I thought to myself "Yep, this guy has the audacity and the sheer balls to be able to win at Iowa State."

No Nebraska fans felt good after that game. It was definitely a moral defeat for them. They know that they won on a fluke.
And as ballsy as the call was in the game, it was equally ballsy to stand by your player during the press conference the next week. CPR gave a history of what the kid had done and said that he would call his number again the next week if necessary. CPR is just awesome. How do you learn how to say things like that? You don't learn it, you just do it because it is genuine.

GO CYCLONES. Correct. Thanks for the sanity. Originally Posted by jdoggivjc I am still 100% convinced it was the right call. Agreed. Originally Posted by RING4CY We still should have beaten a 5-7 Colorado team the week following the Nebraska loss to become bowl eligible.
We didn't deserve to go bowling last year. 100% true. And the way we played against CU, notably our offensive line, was nothing short of pathetic/embarrassing.
