Harris voter: 'I think the BCS is just a mess'

Looks like some Hawk homer had it out for the Big 12.

I love the part where he says in the same breath that ISU is a "very bad" loss, but Southern Miss is a "very good football team."

The Harris Poll panelist who voted Houston No. 5 and Oklahoma State No. 6 this weekend said he believes the system that selects the teams for a national championship through polling and computer rankings needs to go, in favor of a method decided on the field.

"I think the BCS is just a mess," said George Wine, 80, who retired as sports information director at Iowa in 1996 and still writes stories for the Hawkeyes' official site. "I think college football is crying for a playoff system. This voting is highly subjective. I realize that voting is subjective and often arbitrary. I probably don't do as much research ... but who the hell knows whether Oregon is better than Wisconsin?

Wine, reached by phone at his home in Coralville, Iowa, said he has served as a Harris panelist for five years ("It's a well-paying job," he said) and said he feels his decision to vote Houston ahead of Oklahoma State is justified, because he believes Oklahoma State's lone loss (in double overtime at Iowa State) is a worse loss than that of Houston, which lost by 28 at home to Southern Miss this weekend in the Conference USA championship game.

"Oklahoma State lost to Iowa State, which I think is a very bad loss," said Wine, who said he attends every Iowa game he can. "I think Southern Miss is a very good football team."

He prob watched one ISU game this season and 12 total games.

I bet he cried like a little baby after we beat Iowa this year. Was that a bad loss too? Of course he would think it was.

The one ISU game he probably watched was the ISU-Iowa game. It would've been great to see his reaction on the last play in triple overtime. Looks like a lot of teams lost to a "very bad team" this year who had the 2nd hardest schedule in the nation.

It really amazes me, someone that considered themself a journalist for all those years, cannot look objectively at an in-state school. I despise the Hawkeyes, but still realize that they have a shot against OU if KF can put one of his masterful Bowl game plans together. What would he have said if OSU lost to Iowa. Looking objectively at it, this year, Iowa State is a better football team than Iowa.

I usually don't comment on this kind of stuff. Because It seems a lot of people on here have the idea that everything good about ISU is a good article and anything bad the guy is a hack. This guy obviously is having trouble dealing with reality though.

I guess Michigan should be out of a BCS game because they lost to Iowa, who lost to a very bad team. Does that make Michigan a very very very bad team?

Iowa State is "very bad", yet the Southern Miss team that is "very good" has losses to Marshall and UAB.

Iowa lost to Minn which was the worse team in the Big 10, some say the worse Big 10 team in 5 years. How bad was that loss.

Where does one even begin to take this guy seriously when he says the voting is too subjective and then backs up his voting claims by saying he does little research? Then where he really had a chance to explain himself and his voting of OSU below Houston discloses he goes to every Hawkey game he can go to? You would have to be "the most interesting man" type of serious person to not laugh at this guy.
