PINSTRIPE
Iowa State (6-6) vs. Rutgers (8-4)
Where: New York
When: Dec. 30, 3:20 p.m., ESPN
The buzz: Rutgers wins with defense, and its offense is mediocre. The flipside: Iowa State’s offense is solid but its defense isn’t much. Will Yankee Stadium ever be the same?
The line: Rutgers by 1.5 The pick: Rutgers 24-20
WTF? Must not have watched the OSU game.
Re: Another clueless sportswriter
Another reason why sports people shouldn't get paid.

FIFY
The OU game is a better example. Our offense didn't look bad against OSU, but looked horrible against OU, our defense played great in both games, however.
Re: Another clueless sportswriter
f-ing idiot. Just once I wish someone could write an educated article. Offense is pretty solid, but the D has kept us in games when the O struggled.
Re: Another clueless sportswriter
Let me subtitle the article: "Alabama and LSU aren't in this game, so nobody else has told me what to think about these teams and their game. Therefore, here you go. Enjoy the game, because I don't care."
Re: Another clueless sportswriter
Had to be thinking of the Hawks. ESPN columnist graded them a D- for Defense for the year.
Re: Another clueless sportswriter
It's people who have probably not seen an ISU game all season save for maybe the OSU game trying to come up with something to write based on glancing at some box scores and using preconceived ideas of what ISU football is.

Ideas that probably begin with "Iowa State plays football?"
Re: Another clueless sportswriter
Doesn't bother me. Hopefully everyone out east reads this and believes it, including the RU Players. When we show up to play they wont know what hit them.

Re: Another clueless sportswriter
ISU's D isn't much? ISU offense is ok?
Reverse that. Our D is great. Our offense is bad.

Love it. I hope the Rutgers players read this and get overconfident re: our defense.
Re: Another clueless sportswriter
To be fair to this fella, Iowa State is 99th out of 120 teams in total defense and 55th out of 120 in total offense. Obviously we all know better, but from that stat alone his statement is somewhat accurate. But, agree, it is an overly generalized blurb.
Re: Another clueless sportswriter
We're not a Texas, OU, LSU, Bama, USC, Michigan or Ohio State type of school...so why would they ever want to follow us closely and actually get the facts straight in the first place?

The sad thing is that I, as a casual fan of college football, can give you more accurate bowl "previews" than the guys getting paid to do it. I'm not talking about ISU. I'm talking about almost every bowl game below the BCS level. Most of the people developing these things have no idea of the team's basic strengths and weaknesses.
For example, in the same preview, he fails to mention such notable (and important to the sort of person who would read this thing) items such as:
- Utah State's opening season heartbreaker at Auburn
- Ohio's futility in bowl games
- Temple's near miss against Penn State
- ULL's scoring firepower
- San Diego State's kicking problems
- Marshall's really bad season salvaged by early win at Southern Miss (lucky to be bowling)
and so on and so on. Out of all those bowl games, he provided maybe 3 or 4 useful, fact-based one-liners for that many teams. These are all things that I can easily glean from memory of listening to football on the radio and catching glimpses on t.v.
That guy did a bad job.
