question regarding DE video up on cyclones.com

On today's practice videos of the DE's, the only guys participating on the drill are Maggitt, Irving, Scott, Kron, and Marcus Benton (walk on). Missing are Rony Nelson, Cory Morrissey, or Devin Lemke.

So is this because Nelson, Morrissey and Lemke play on the other side of the defensive line, so they don't participate in this particular drill or what?

I've never heard of a drill for DE on only one side of the ball. Maybe those guys were a little dinged up?
"No matter how many hours you study opponent films, there's only going to be eleven players on the other side of the line of scrimmage." - Sid Gillman

It's a simple game in which strategic beauty comes not from being surprised by some new clever trick, but from the sublime, routine brilliance of a master in his element.

I hope so, because I wasn't impressed with any of the 5 in those drills.
NHL teams need to be added to the favorite teams section.

Re: question regarding DE video up on cyclones.com

I know I saw #85 (Lemke) in the last drill on the videos yesterday, and I believe I also saw #48 (Morrissey) in that video too possibly?

But no signs of Rony Nelson. However, Rony has been in previous videos from earlier on, so who knows?

I do know we need every available body we can get at DE though. Maggitt is probably the only Big 12 caliber DE we have, and he's dinged up. Somebody else is really going to have to step it up.

And watching those videos, I think David Irving still has quite a ways to go. Not saying he can't be a stud for us some day, but he is VERY raw. He looks like a basketball player that has put pads on for the first time and has never played much football at all... which he really hasn't. I think we all put way too high of expectations on this kid JUST because he's 6'8" and 260 lbs. That does not mean he's a good DE. I think he can be, but looking at the videos and listening to his position coach, it sounds like he still has a LOT to learn. He shouldn't have played last year IMO.

David Irving is raw. But he has size and talent. He will be playing a LOT this fall. He has little football experience at this time. And still was able to see the field last fall.

We should be okay at DE. Lots of talent.

Making any judgement off of a 2 minute clip from Spring Practice is kinda stupid. Just saying.

Yeah... well then how about making your judgement off of what Rhoads himself had to say about Irving after yesterday's scrimmage then?

Rhoads himself sounded like Irving has a LONG ways to go. He sounded as if he still has a lot to learn fundamentally AND he needs to develop a mean streak in him.... which sometimes is very hard to do. Sometimes kids are just what they are.

IMO, there's no way that Irving should have played last year. He was nowhere even close to being ready, and it sounds like this year he won't be either yet.

People just need to understand that this kid has only played football for a few years. He's VERY raw, and he needs to develop a "mean" attitude.
Until that happens, he's going to be very average I'm afraid. This is the kind of diamond in the rough that you just hope something clicks sometime and you're able to get one or maybe two good years out of IMO.

This could very well all happen, and he ends up having a great final two years here, but all this talk of him ending up being one of the best DE's we've ever had, blah, blah, blah, that's nonsense.

He'll probably be the biggest DE we've ever had, but that means NOTHING. Don't get me wrong, I hope and pray that he figures out how to play the position and ends up being great, I really do, but what makes everyone place all these crazy expectations on a kid? I just don't get it?

You do realize he was listed as the number 1 end on the depth chart right?

Yeah... what does that prove? We don't have a lot of proven players at DE right now besides Maggitt.

I just feel that by listening to some on here, you'd think that Irving was expected to have double digit sacks this year or something ONLY because he has the size you like to see.

Rhoads said that Irving is raw, and he lacks the aggression you'd like to see from that position. If that describes our #1 DE on the depth chart, that means you have issues at that position IMO.

I don't think anyone is predicting that type of season. But I think he's going to be a starter and have a chance to improve throughout the year. I think everyone is just really excited about his potential, and after a year of starting he should start to live up to some of his potential.

Seems like I recall CPR saying that they didn't want to play Big Dave last fall but circumstances didn't allow him to redshirt. Anyone else recall that?

So, Big D played in 2011 by default only. We were short bodies. He did not earn PT in the usual way.

Please don't misconstrue my comment. I love the kid. From spring practice photos, the kid has worked hard in the weight room, he's very well spoken (love to see that in an athlete), and one key reason he selected ISU, he has said, is Jack Trice's legacy. He's got an emotional-intellectual bond to ISU. Great stuff.

Wish we were strong enough at DE that Big D could redshirt this fall. Won't happen, but wish it could.

Putting things into context as to how long he has played. Just a few months of practice would amount to about 25% of his football career. He has probably played more football at ISU than he previously played in his whole life. And he STILL saw the field as a true freshman. IMO, the learning curve could be very fast for a young man like David Irving. This is his first spring practice. I look for him to be much better this fall and after that the potential is there for a breakout.

Rhoads didn't redshirt Irving last year so he could play some and be better prepared for this year.

Irving didn't redshirt last year because Maggit got hurt right away. They didn't have enough guys so Irving got in there. They would have loved to redshirt him.

Re: question regarding DE video up on cyclones.com

No argument that it would have been nice to redshirt David Irving. But even though he is inexperienced, Irving brings a lot of raw natural talent and size to the DE position. We have some decent DE prospects. I actually like what we have coming back. Maggitt, Scott, Morrissey, Irving, Kron and Nelson are some decent talent. They just need more experience.
