That he was charged with anything more than aggravated assault ( A person who commits an assault, as defined in section 708.1, and uses or displays a dangerous weapon in connection with the assault, is guilty of an aggravated misdemeanor) seems a a bit harsh.
That he was convicted of 2 felonies just seems bizarre. And that's with no disrespect to victims of robbery or people who know victims of robbery.
There was more than assault involved. Gary apparently tried to rob somebody. Given credible and reliable evidence, there's really no reason why any competent DA would plead attempted armed robbery down to something that didn't involve a felony.
