Don't rush to judgment. In a city the size of Ames, there must be at least a dozen Matt Tau'fo'ou's running around.

However, it is far too subjective and is way more aggressively enforced over VEISHEA weekend than the other 362 days of the year. If the police have to carry you into jail because you are passed out on the street, than OK. Otherwise, let people go about their business and get home safely. That should pretty much be how its always enforced. Usually, it is, but its an extremely subjective crime as written. You only have to appear intoxicated to be charged with it.

If the police have to carry you into jail because you are passed out on the street, than OK. Otherwise, let people go about their business and get home safely. Drunk people wandering amongst traffic in the street, or the drunk ones wandering down the sidewalk and repeatedly falling off the curb into the street would seem to pose as much, if not more, danger than a stationary, passed out person.
I suspect it isn't so much that the law is way more aggresively enforced over VEISHEA weekend, as much as there are just way more drunk people wandering around posing danger...

I've heard of a lot of people getting public intox's for just simply walking alone on the sidewalk. Although 99% of people pose no danger to themselves by doing this, you do have your Abel's and John Lacina's.

A little bit of both is the likely explanation.

About half the people I know who got PIs got them in this fashion. Those always seem to get written up on Thursday nights when there is no drunk bus, but a lot of people want to go the bars, and don't want to drive home.
The other half of the folks I know who got them deserved it.

You have to really stand out from the crowd to get picked up for public intox over VEISHA weekend. Do a ride-a-long and get an understanding of what is really going on. PM me if you are interested.
Here is a good example of a public intox arrest:
-Officer sees subject stumbling/having difficulty walking/passed out in alley/fighting/breaking things/or someone else calls in concerned about the subject and officer responds.
-Officer gets out and asks the subject if he is ok. (observes strong smell of alcohol, slurred speech, blood shot and watery eyes)
-Officer asks where subject lives and where his friends are at.
-Subject can't think of his address and tells the officer that his friends left him.
-Officer finally finds out where subject lives by getting subject's ID out of his pocket which the subject could not locate on his own.
-Officer asks him which way he is walking to get home.
-Subject points the wrong direction and then almost falls over.
-Officer arrests subject.
The city and the police department face liability issues. If you can't understand this then it is as simple as a lack of maturation on your part.
Pretty standard stuff, really.

Walked my buddy home from the bar on his 21st... obviously couldnt walk on his own.
Cops gave him the business and said walk in a straight line foot in front of foot and he goes "nope can't do it"
they go... alright well you guys just take him home and make sure he's okay... then left.
not all Ames cops are ****s... most are, but some understand.

Pretty standard stuff, really. Id prefer if you did not refer people as "subjects". Its highly offensive.

Him and Latt were at my buddies place before they went to the bars. He was hammered.

Re: Former Cyclone Arrested last night
I always thought it was common knowledge that you'd get a Public Intox by walking home alone.
Apparently the police would rather you drove home drunk than walk home drunk. Far less likelihood of getting picked up there (sorta)

not all Ames cops are ****s... most are, but some understand. Basically same thing happened to my buddy. He was obviously drunk but we were all polite and assured them we were only a 5 minute walk from our house.
Needless to say he got arrested.
