Re: Coach PR on being at ISU
I listened to the interview with Murph and Andy and people are freaking out about nothing. At the end of his interview he said "If my career did end here, I would be very happy"
When he said it was unlikely, it could be for various reasons what if we go 2-10 the next four years in a row? He will probably get fired.
I am not saying he will never take another job, but when he says "Its obvious how happy I am here" it doesnt sound like he is in any hurry to leave

I am not saying he will never take another job, but when he says "Its obvious how happy I am here" it doesnt sound like he is in any hurry to leave After reading the Peterson recap and watching the video, I think some of the freak-out happened with his choice of words, "it's unlikely" he would retire at ISU.
In context of that discussion, I took it to mean "the odds are low for that possibility" or "that scenario doesn't happen very often."
Which brings us to: “Iowa State has got to want me all that time, to begin with."
And as you said, various reasons. If he doesn't perform, ISU won't keep him around. If he has a lot of success, he may get other opportunities and Iowa State would have to compensate accordingly.

I value his truthfulness, but I think he could make the same comments but in more a positive light. Good luck selling the "All in" mantra to kids when you aren't.

Re: Coach PR on being at ISU
Uniguy, if your saying Rhoads isnt "all in" your an idiot. The guy just signed a 10 year deal and is a Clone to the bone. You find us a coach that wants to be here as much as he does, ill retrack my statement.

Re: Coach PR on being at ISU
I don't really see the big deal. I guess it is the slow season for college sports, so people have to manufacture controversy or something.
Look, the man is just being honest. How likely is it that any coach will be at their current school 10 years from now? I can't think of many that anyone can say that about for sure.
He is just making the point that it is not totally up to him. Let's face it.......if CPR averages 5 wins a year for the next 5 years.......there will be a lot of people on here calling for his replacement.
If he has success, ISU fans will want to keep him and hopefully ISU will be able to afford to keep him.
Relax. I think he loves being here, and probably would love to stay here for the next 20 years, but he also realizes that he has to win to do that.......something that has not proven very easy to do at ISU, not even for coaches like Johnny Majors and Earle Bruce.

Re: Coach PR on being at ISU
I said this yesterday but CPR is just being honest. Besides Joe Paterno and Tom Osborne and Bill Synder, who else started and ended their head coaching career at the same program? I'm guessing it's not that big of a group

Re: Coach PR on being at ISU
How many coaches get to retire from their dream job? Answer...not many. Hell, JoPa couldn't even retire at his dream job (too soon?). Bowden at FSU? How about Woody Hayes at OSU? I don't count forced retirement as retirement.
Point is, there are too many ins and outs and what-have-yous to honestly say you'll retire somewhere. It is actually pretty presumptuous, and it could be argued that saying that you'll retire somewhere actually shows a less moral character than saying "it is doubtful". Let's look at a current crappy coach as an example: Gene Chizik may say that he wants to retire at Auburn since it is his dream job...but who thinks he'll be able to retire at Auburn...certainly not me. Not that he doesn't want to...it is more that it will be unlikely that he can.
Anyone taking this to mean CPR is out the door as soon as he can get a better offer is full of it. Unfortunately, that is the way the media is spinning it right now. They ask one loaded question that Rhoads answers honestly (and in my opinion, more honorably) and then there is blood in the water. This is now getting passed and interpreted all over by morons out to make a story. So, because of this situation alone, that is where I disagree with Rhoads making this comment. Answering a loaded question, albeit honestly, opens up a lot of interpretation and doubt, affects recruiting, etc. Hopefully someone can fire up the PR machine to keep this under control.

I don't really get why people are quick to assume he wouldn't want to stay here, guys like Chris Petersen, or Mark Few show that some coaches are committed to seeing things through.

Re: Coach PR on being at ISU
I like the honesty. Coaching is a fickle business. He may be happy being here forever, but who knows what offers come if he has some real success here. Or, we may be happy now, but who knows what the fanbase thinks 7-8 years from now if we've had a couple bad seasons. Look at McCarney, there was a time nobody wouldve imagined him getting fired, and then a few years later, he gone.

This is the sort of thing that he should emphasize (and not take the risks of watering it down with the obvious possibilities).

Re: Coach PR on being at ISU
This whole "firestorm" confirms what I've noticed and thought all along: Hawkeye fans are scared of Paul Rhoads. They see the energy he's brought, and the brand he's starting to create, and they're scared. They can't handle the thought of ISU being as competitive as they are in the CFB world. So when Rhoads says this, THEY are the ones manufacturing all this nonsense. There's a thread on HN right now as long as this one filled with Hawks saying Rhoads is leaving, ISU is a stepping stone, and so on and so forth. Completely ignoring the fact Rhoads said he'd love to retire here and wishes he could stay as long as he has our full support.

Re: Coach PR on being at ISU
My gut tells me he's gone within the next 5 years. Either to a bigger school or fired. I'm leaning towards fired. I'm not really sold on this team being a big improvement on last years 6-7 team.

I agree with you putting "firestorm" in quotes. Where is the evidence of anything actually resembling a firestorm? I just see a few of us liking the honesty of what he said and others of us wishing he didn't mention the negative possibilities when stating his deep commitment to ISU. Are we the "firestorm?"

Every so often (once a decade?) rise up and challenge for the conference title. But, just like there are A LOT of jobs better than Iowa, there will always be a lot of jobs better than ISU. Just the reality of the situation.
