This has been posted before, but is really interesting. I'm all for stadium improvements, and we have been making them. The new scoreboard, new lobby areas, sinage and I suspect the south end zone eventually. There are a lot of colleges with less seating then Iowa State. Take a look.

Arkansas plays two games at war memorial, the rest of their home games are in Fayetteville in front of 76,000. If Iowa state had seating for 60,000 and kept it full, that would a great achievement. Always better to have more demand than seats,makes the seats you have worth more

Georgia seats over 90k. Keep in mind that there are a lot of grass seats included in the 55k number for Iowa state which probably isn't true for most of the others.

But, because our stadium does not actually have seats and has a lot of open areas, it doesn't have the same effect as some of the above stadiums. We only have 41,000 sideline seats and I'm not sure how many in the endzone grand stand. 3,000? We really need to do something. We claim 55,000 and we can get that many in for sure, but that 55,000 would have a better effect on game day atmosphere and on recruits visiting if we actually had the seats instead of open air and grass. We are kidding ourselves if we think we are going to recruit enough good talent to the northern most outpost without doing some expansion to our stadium. Just in our conference alone, TCU and Baylor are building new stadiums, KSU is doing an awesome stadium project, Tech and OSU just got done with one. West Virginia has our stadium but with more rows on their upper decks, endzone seats and about 12 to 15 thousand more seats over all. We have to get something done.

Seats matter of course for dollars, but for the fans and the players, it's all about the atmosphere.

If we could trade Jack Trice right now for Rice's stadium shown above, I'd do it in a heartbeat. It looks to me like Rice's stadium is completely enclosed, and that adds a TON to the atmosphere IMO.

They don't have two open ends with some cheap temporary stands in one end and a goofy looking building sitting in the other end with a huge highway sign scoreboard built around it. Not to mention Rice doesn't have grass seating either.

I love the Cyclones, but even with all the improvements, Jack Trice leaves a lot to be desired IMO. Enclosing the south end would help out a LOT, especially if it was the same height as the rest of the stadium. The north end is always going to be a mess with the horrible looking Jake building and the scoreboard that doesn't fit in. Sorry, just my honest opinion.

Bowling in the SEZ is just a bunch of concrete and seats basically, whereas the new football offices have so much extra cost in new equipment, furniture, TV's, carpet, heating and a/c, more plumbing, and so on.

Numbers I heard was SEZ $35M, FTF $21M. Gotta remember, the SEZ includes new restroom and concessions around the south side and likely a plaza outside a new south gate.

Seems I'm not the only "idiot" then? A lot of people on this site feel the same way, and a lot of Cyclone friends of mine do too. JTS is not a Big 12 football stadium. Sorry. It just isn't. We are getting closer, but we're not there yet.

As for the SEZ project, it still blows my mind how expensive that is. But we should be able to pull it off now that we'll be making 20 million a year in the Big 12, right?
