The past couple years we've always had a few kinks in the first game that get worked out later in the season
In November as CPR and company are putting the finishing touches on another bowl season, CFers (myself included) will lament about how we would've blown Tulsa out of the water had we played them later in the year
Sorry man but you are pretty well known for one minute having this massive breakdown where you say something like, " Oh my gosh, we are terrible, wont win another game this year."
And in the same game, "This is the best team in Iowa State history. This Steel Jantz guy could seriously be in the heisman race."
anybody with free time care to post the scores of our past 10 or so seasons first games? Dont we usually struggle and have low scoring?
If Jantz starts, I say we squeak by in a shootout 35-31. If Barnett starts we win 27-14. The run game will be huge to control the clock and keep Tulsa's offense off the field, hopefully we don't get cute and just run over them like we are capable.
2001 vs UNI - W - 41-0
2002 vs Florida State - L - 31-38
2003 vs UNI - W - 17-10
2004 vs UNI - W - 23-0
2005 vs NIU - W - 32-21
2006 vs Toledo - W - 45-43 (3 OT)
2007 vs Kent St - L - 14-23
2008 vs SDSU - W - 44-17
2009 vs NDSU - W - 34-17
2010 vs NIU - W - 27-10
2011 vs UNI - W 20-19
Cannot really put a correlation on how we play to start a season. Especially with three different coaching staffs during this sample.
What you typically see with Rhoads though is what a lot of these guys have predicted. A slow game for most of the way with depth finally winning out as the 2nd half wears on. I anticipate the same happening with Tulsa and having a final result somewhere close to NIU score give or take a touchdown on either side.
2000 - W - 25-15 Ohio
2001 - W - 41-0 UNI
2002 - L - 31-38 Florida State
2003 - W - 17-10 UNI
2004 - W - 23-0 UNI
2005 - W - 32-21 Illinois State
2006 - W - 45-43 (3 OTs) Toledo
2007 - L 14-23 Kent State
2008 - W - 44-17 South Dakota State
2009 - W - 34-17 North Dakota State
2010 - W - 27-10 Nothern Illinois
2011 - W - 20-19 UNI
Average score - 31 to 17.75
So we usually win by about 14.
In general we don't usually blow out our first game cupcakes but the only bad team we lost to was Kent State and I blame that all on Gene Chizik and the coaching change.
A lot of times, especially during the DMac years, we would go really vanilla in the opener which is saying a lot because the regular offense was pretty vanilla too.
I think this year the defense will be up to the Tulsa challenge and will slow down Cody Green and their RBs. The offense will hopefully lean on the ground game and pass when needed.
