Because we run the pistol set or shotgun, we do not predetermine the play,
its adjust at the LOS to the option/pass call based on the defensive strength,
and secondary adjustment to motion.
Adjust correctly like at Texas Tech we win big.
IF we don't commit off side penalties, or holding, or mis-alignment, we are a very solid offensive ball control offense.
We need better TE play to both run and pass deep.
TE success delays the Lbers reaction to run or pass gives us separation in the
secondary, and the Qb more time to find the deep receivers.
So in short, read the defense, excute the play, score, win.

Unless our quarterback is named Collin Klein, passing will win Big 12 games for us. For us that whole not turning the ball over thing is going to be important as well

If Wayne Stanley is the QB, pass first.
Whether you primarily run or pass depends on your personnel, primarily the QB's skill set. The spread offense can facilitate either or both depending on the personnel.

Depends if we get the 5 star receiver who just broke his commitment to Texas!

You mean make adjustments in our offensive play calling like we didn't do against Rutgers!
I think this also is related to how well our offensive line can hold the pocket for our QB.

I'll take execution. Run a limited number of plays & run them well. Whatever the philosophy is keep it consistent.

Especially in the first quarter. We can't let ourselves get into trouble early because of offensive miscues.

Re: I State QB: run first or pass first?
Jantz, pass.
Barnett, run.
Personally I prefer the idea of Jantz being the QB, but being a run first team. Last year we just tried putting the ball in his hands and let him make plays. We played better as a team because we recognized Barnetts weakness and were just a run based team. Ala Tebow and the Broncos last year.
Jantz seems to make plays at clutch times, let the running game do its thing and if we need a clutch play hes there. Probably improved from last year too, because thats pretty normal for QB's to do.

Re: I State QB: run first or pass first?
Doesn't matter, they just need to be really good at one or the other. Right now we have guys that are below average passers and OK runners.

Re: I State QB: run first or pass first?
I want a passing QB that reads the read option in near perfection.
-
Re: I State QB: run first or pass first?
Sort of off-topic, but not really:
I think the biggest thing Jantz could improve on to be our best option at QB would be to get better at the zone read. He's a good enough runner to make it work, but he doesn't run it worth a damn. Its the biggest advantage Barnett has over him, as Barnett probably runs it better than anyone else here has. If Jantz could be a competent zone read operator, there wouldn't be a QB competition.

I disagree with that last sentence. Both Barnett and Jantz are good to very good runners. Barnett is an extremely efficient zone read operator.

Re: I State QB: run first or pass first?
I've always felt that so-called "dual-threat" QBs are overrated. I think you have much more success when your QB is a strong passer rather than a strong runner. That's what running backs are for, and I've just never believed that you gain much by the QB being essentially an extra running back.
My ideal is a strong passer with sufficient mobility to escape pressure and buy more time for a receiver to get open.

If the QB can pass reasonably well, and is a threat to escape the backfield and break off a long run, its very difficult to shut down.
