CF Exclusive Conversation: With Shane Burnham

Re: CF Exclusive Conversation: With Shane Burnham
Talk of Collin Bevins and Mitchell Meyers on the inside. I knew this would be Meyers fate, but I thought Bevins would start at DE. The kid is a great track athlete, and should have the ability to work the edge. But it looks like they plan on using him at DT. Not a lot of talk about the second year players either, like David Irving or Quinton Pompey. Hopefully that is just oversight, as I think we will need both these guys to produce to have a good season. -

I don't think we will see Pompey play much this season barring injuries to guys ahead of him. I think he's still recovering that knee and pretty far behind

I wanted to take this interview in a different direction and avoid "what do you think about this guy, that guy, etc." type of questions.

Solid interview. Shane really appears to enjoy ISU and hopefully he'll be able to take over for his dad one day.

This interview reminds me of him telling the story from the Cyclone Fanatic Recruitment Party in which he talked about Jake McDonough not being the kind of recruit they want because of his size. Then Rhoads comes up next to him and tells him that McDonoughs parents are right in front of him. Shane backpedals a little and makes it fine.
It is great to be in a position where we are helping guys grow into the position, but also getting some recruits who are already physically ready.

He was talking about how when he got to Iowa State Jake was only 220 as he had that illness and lost all that weight. I think Jake is plenty big size wise for what Iowa State wants.

Yes, but he was also using Jake as an example of the kind of defensive lineman that we no longer want to recruit! That is why Rhoads interrupted him before he got too far.
Jake has been a great contributor and is a highlight of our program. It all ended fine, but it sure sounded like Shane was going to go too far in his description of what we don't want to recruit with McDonoughs parents standing right in front of him. They understood what Shane meant and were good sports about it.
This is much of what I like about Shane, Rhoads, and the whole program. They are just out there and open with their thoughts. They make you feel like you really know what they are thinking. And this is very fun as a fan.

Easily your best interview, Chris. You didn't propose ho-hum generic questions this time around, and your interviewee gave great responses. Keep it up.

I stick by what I said when we got him, Bevins is going to be a monster DT in a few years.

I hear you man, he gets up to near 300 and he will be a load for anyone to stop in the big 12. And a mean streak too from the sound of it. Looking forward to seeing him play in a few years.
