Ben Durbin
I just noticed he was a transfer from Wyoming (assuming for a grad program?) and in 2 playing seasons with Wyoming he had 44 tackles, 5.5 TFL and 4 sacks. He could possibly step in and get a few minutes per game on the D-Line? Or do you guys think he'll mainly be a squad member?
He is listed at 6'3 272 so he has decent size.
Sorry if this is a bump thread...

Re: Ben Durbin
Yes, same situation as Jake Anderson in basketball a couple years ago.
He will definitely play this year.

Re: Ben Durbin
At least a couple threads in the archives on him - from Gilbert & has graduated already from Wyoming. Really think he will play a pretty big role. Should have included him as the 'newcomer' to make the most impact this coming season. Think Demoncore started that thread yesterday.

Re: Ben Durbin
If a guy with pedestrian at best numbers playing for Wyoming truly plays a "big role" for us we are in a whole heap of trouble.

Defensive line is an area you can never have enough depth. I like the addition.

Re: Ben Durbin
He was going to be a DE for his final season at Wyoming at 270+ lbs.
Don't know if he will be interior DL or DE here, but he is bigger than the 2 DEs we lost. If he has the speed & stays at DE, we could potentially have the largest DEs we have had in quite a while.
If he is not up to the being a DE, but has the strength & motor to provide depth on the interior, then that will be welcome, too. Maybe in a rotational format he can provide more bigger plays as he will be more fresh/not worn down. Had 3.5 tfl, 2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, 2 forced fumbles, & blocked 1 kick for a D-1 program. Yeah, I think he could play an important role.

DL tend to have 'pedestrian' numbers and I suppose it depends upon how one would define 'big role'. I have a feeling this kid will relish his 'role'.

Re: Ben Durbin
I think that he's a DT all the way, but COULD play some DE on short yardage downs. The way I look at it, they have two solid starters in McDonough and Laing. Backups would be Woods, Jensen, Simon and Pompey. Durbin can definitely fit into the rotation with those four guys, giving ISU better interior DL depth than I can ever remember. The only problem is that they'll have four SRs out of those 7 spots, so they'll really need guys like Meyers and Cousins to develop for 2013.

Only the top DL in the country are going to have stats that jump off the page at you, look at our DL the last 2 seasons. Nothing special from a stats standpoint from them but if you look deeper you can see they must be playing well if Knott and Klein are able to put up such big numbers. LB's don't make tackles if the DL (especially DT's) aren't doing their job.

This is the kind of arrogance and ignorance that ISU fans hate when it comes from other schools. Wyoming was a bowl team with solid wins last year. ISU was the better team, but not by much. This guy played against Nebraska, TCU, and Boise State last year. He will be ready to play for us.
