    WVU-new potential rival?

I was taking a gander at the Mountaineer message boards here recently, sounds like they believe we will end up being their biggest rival. It starts off this year when we get them on Senior Night at home.

Right now, K-State seems to be our biggest rival in conference with Nebraska and Mizzou gone.

One of the posters on the WVU site said that it almost "seems the Big 12 is trying to set up our new rivalry with (Coach) Rhoads, who dealt with us while at Pitt".

    Thoughts?

I think if we WVU is doing well in the Big 12 and we knock them off at home a la Okie State last year we could get something started for sure.

I hope so. I don't want it to be KU...

Only time will tell if a rivalry develops. However, one aspect that could add something to the kettle is that WVU's coach, Dana Holgerson, is an Iowa native. I'm not sure why the Rag has never followed him all that much, considering how much they seem to stretch every other conceivable Iowa connection.

West Virginia will most likely get Pitt back on its schedule in the future. That is its true rival. They played each other long before they were both in the Big East and they will again.

He must not have any ties to the uofi. Nope, he went to Iowa Wesleyan. Where Mike Leach was a coach?? Wowsers. He's got several years coaching in the Big XII, with TTU and OSU.
On another note, I think Senolyc is right on about the old rivalry with Pitt being renewed. When all the ruffled feathers and hurt egos have eased with the passage of time, UT will again play aTm in football, KU will play Mizzou in BB. In or out of conferences, those are natural long term rivalries.

The two northernmost schools should be rivals. Does it snow a lot in WV in late November? No wonder they burn couches.

IMHO - you don't "pick" a rivalry. It just happens. I laugh when I hear Iowa fans discuss their "great rivalry" with Nebraska. They hardly know each other and have only played 6 or so times in the past 50 years.

WVA may develop into a rivalry for ISU, but for me it will take a few years to cultivate the true hatred and loathing I feel for Iowa or KSU.

I'd like them to be our rival for sure. KSU just doesn't seem to have fanned the passion that a rivalry should have (though I enjoyed the hell out of sweeping them in basketball).

Perhaps you're right about sPitt. However this article WVU, Iowa State Game Moved To Friday - Mountaineer Sports: WVU Basketball, WVU Football, News says you all have taken over the traditional game day we had with sPitt. Moving this to Friday always meant it was a nationally televised game. Bring it on!

But the game has a name - surely it must be a rivalry.

I'm disappointed that you didn't say weiner in your post. It will be hard to be rivals with WVU as both ISU and WVU agree upon 1 major thing...Louisville fans have small weiners. Thus, our friendly rivalry of dumpster/couch burning will be more of a celebration full of awesome!

I am sorry. I am tired today. I could see us calling them Weiner Virginia U.

"Damn couch burning, mountain imbred, poor people, cousin ******* WEINERS"- I guess I could see that working.

However, They seem pretty cool so far, but their is always a chance. I guess i would be fine with a friendly rivalry like you talked about. "Good game chaps. Let us drink and make fun of those weiner squaks and louvisille."
