Re: If you were ISU head football coach...

I would be recruiting guys that could help me win so I could get a head coaching job at a traditional football school.

It must suck knowing that K-State has an all-time losing record against a "non traditional football school".

    2. I'd say run a simple gameplan for Tulsa which involves a majority of run plays, but I'd also throw in a gadget play or a fake punt somewhere to keep Tulsa off-balance.

    3. If it was my team, I wouldn't start Jantz or Barnett. I honestly think that the best passer out of the QBs will be Sam Richardson because he seems more like the pure passer out of the two. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Richardson is the starter by the end of the season especially if Jantz and Barnett both suck.
I agree with this. Maybe not they will both suck, but if you factor in both inconsistency and injuries, I could see it. In fact, if I were forced to bet, I would bet money on Richardson starting at least one game this season.

Would you play it safe against Tulsa to open the season or open the playbook? I could see both ways...not leaving anything off the gameplan due to the fact Tulsa is favored to win or keeping some stuff unseen to make scouting vids less helpful.

Finally, Who would start as your QB to open the season and why?
You try to get some of the best in state talent obviously, but for the most part its all about getting the best players possible. Of course getting those better Iowa boys would still have to fall under getting the best players possible, even if they are in the lower end of our class.

I would run pretty vanilla schemes for the most part against easier(hopefully) teams like Tulsa. If the game is pretty tight, then you open it up more as needed.

I start Steele Jantz, because he has a lot more playmaking ability. He has a chance to prove he has a better grasp of the playbook, and a better chemistry with his receivers. What I change from last year though is, I would ease him into it. Seemed like we just wanted to throw with him and get him hot. I would run it down the teams throats as much as possible then burn them with some play action. As he proves he has improved his consistency, then you start to loosen the chain more and more as the season goes on. If turnovers keep happening, you put in Barnett. IF Jantz turns it over a few times, but is scoring more TD's and we don't have a problem winning.. keep him in.

This is unfortunate. Nothing against what you said, just stemming from the fact that this football team will likely be most successful if either jantz or barnett start all 13 games. And, maybe even play every significant snap as well.

Always go after the best talent that fits the style of football you want to play.

But always try for the top Iowans that fit your system

Show as much as necessary versus Tulsa to win the game -lots of running game since you already said that we are a run first team.

I'd like Jantz to start but only if he has shown he can make better decisions. I also would not hesitate to play Richardson and give him a chance as both SJ and JB had multiple chances last season and for the most part failed. In fact I would give GR a chance to show what he can do as well since apparently no one else has stepped up and taken the job which is what I really want.
