How many wins would it take to get ranked?
We're undefeated right now, so I got to thinking. How many wins would Iowa State have to string together to start the season before we showed up in the Top 25? I think it would take a 5-0 or possibly a 6-0 start before we saw Iowa State on the list. I'm not saying I do or don't expect us to get such a start, I'm just wondering what kind of ranking that would get us.
Here's how I see it:
Week 1 - Tulsa: Not ranked
Week 2 - Iowa: Not ranked
Week 3 - Western Illinois: Not ranked
Week 4 - Bye: Not ranked.
Week 5 - Texas Tech: Not ranked, might start receiving votes
Week 6 - TCU: Receiving votes, might break the Top 25 if several of the 16-25 ranked teams stumble
Week 7 - Kansas State: Top 25 for sure
I think voters are gunshy about ranking us in Football, plus a lot of schools won't have faced any real opponents until week 4 or 5. So it'll take a while to catch their attention and also have preseason hype fade for the Notre Dames and Auburns of the world.
Taking it a step further, how long would it take us to break the top 10? I'm thinking that would happen after beating Oklahoma in Week 10 to go 9-0.
Losing to Bye in week four would ruin everything.

I think you're right on the money.
Receiving a lot of votes if we go 5-0 and 6-0 would get us ranked for sure.

Style points probably matter a lot as well. If we were to dominate Tulsa and Iowa we might be receiving votes by the time we take on Bye and be ranked with a dominating win over Tech.

I think winning first five would do it.

5-0 has to happen, then we crack the top 25.

Re: How many wins would it take to get ranked?
If we can start 5-0 after beating a potential top 15 team in TCU, then there is a chance that we could be ranked. Then if we beat K-State at home, then we would for sure be ranked at 6-0. However we have to win the games first.
Favorite Teams: Kansas City Chiefs: 2-14, 1st Pick in Draft, QB Acquired, Optimistic future Iowa State Cyclones Basketball: 23-12(11-7) Season Over-Thank you seniors Chicago Cubs: 4-8, Another ugly season incoming. Thank you Ricketts. -

6-0. Nobody is going to think we're good enough to get into a bowl game until we get that sixth win. We'll hear a lot of, "Wait until Iowa State has to play those ranked teams every week," if the season starts off strong enough.

I think I need to start wearing my glasses more. I thought the subject of the thread was How many wins would it take to get naked?
But for the actual topic, I don't think you see us ranked until we beat TCU and be 6-0.

it would have to be 5-0, nobody in the first 4 games is good enough to give us the boost we need.

I think this is part of what that SBNation article alluded to a few weeks ago ("Convince Me, Coach"). We've become known for getting a big upset every year, so one big upset probably isn't enough for us to get major recognition that lasts longer than 24 hours. We need to start stringing things together.

Number of wins will only drive us further into South Park "giant pile" territory...

Re: How many wins would it take to get ranked?
Well, if we handle the first 3 games easily then blow out Tech in the opener, ISU could see themselves getting votes/perhaps be ranked #23-#25 heading into the TCU road game. A lot depends on what is happening to the current ranked teams too. So I am saying that at 4-0 there is a chance that our guys get in there.
But who cares? Let's get Tulsa! That's all that matters right now.
